The Global Innovation Exchange (GIX) is a global partnership between major research universities and innovative corporations to develop thought leaders in innovation. The first two academic partners are Tsinghua University and the University of Washington, with early support from Microsoft.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computing Specialist to support the computing needs of faculty, students, and staff, coordinate with service providers, and help guide IT strategy for GIX.
This position requires someone who can serve as a high-level generalist, adept with many facets of computing and IT, serving a diverse user base. Will support academic programs that rely heavily on computing resources, and that will have periods of very heavy demand where users will face timeline pressures. Also will coordinate between several entities involved in or using the building, with their own processes and user bases.
Computing infrastructure is critical to the academic programs of GIX. Position will also need to ensure that GIX and its users are following appropriate network security protocols.
Areas of responsibilities and specific duties include:
System Administration: 40%
With minimal supervision, the person in this role will have primary responsibilities for GIX system administration duties, database and application support, and end-user support, while supporting and demonstrating the value for GIX and participating in department-wide initiatives and programs.
Serve as primary point of contact with UW IT
Troubleshoot application problems in a methodical way and reports results appropriately.
Train system users including in use of application software.
Configure, test, and install software.
Application Support: 30%
Design, implement, and test data recovery systems.
Design and implement IT infrastructure for clients.
Design and implement physical and virtual servers.
Assist with risk management, security compliance and business continuity planning.
Design, implement, modify and maintain databases and related reports using SQL, SSRS, and SharePoint. Utilize APIs to integrate operations between different systems.
Be aware and understand systems interaction with both internal and external systems.
Support the provisioning, design and maintenance of Canvas sites or equivalent. Evaluate applications and IT solution for GIX business needs, works with GIX administration to select and provision systems.
Monitor and manage software licenses.
Provide support to Maker Space manager, Director of Academic Programs, course faculty, and others in deploying and troubleshooting the platforms they use.
IT Projects Lead: 30%
Participation in formally managed projects.
Be willing to install and lift hardware such as monitors, workstations and hard drives.
Prepare documentation for training and testing that is professional in appearance, detailed, and accurate.
Possesses excellent oral and written communication and problem solving skills Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or related field
Four to five years of related experience
Follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.
Professionally represent the department to both internal and external customers.
Demonstrated excellent customer service
Exhibit good time management habits and demonstrate the ability to prioritize tasks.
Demonstrated commitment to participating in building a positive work environment and to collaborative teamwork
Ability to remain flexible as changes occur in GIX
Experience with: -Windows server administration -Active Directory -Cloud services such as Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud
Ability to create clear and concise technical documentation for a wide audience
General knowledge of the IT industry and trends
Ability to lift/move 50 lbs.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
SQL design and administration of one or more of the following: Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL
IIS Web server administration
Experience with Unix servers such as Linux
Experience with hypervisors such as Hyper-V and vSphere
Experience with Windows print servers
Experience with cloud backup automation
Experience supporting MS Office suite
