The CPS/Northwestern University (NU) High School STEM Partnership Senior Coordinator position will serve as a liaison between NU and two neighborhood high schools in Chicago Public Schools (CPS): Lake View High School and Mather High School. The Sr. Coordinator will work with the CPS STEM office, teachers and administrators at each school, and with corporate, community, and civic partners to strengthen in-school and out-of-school STEM learning opportunities.
In particular, the Sr. Coordinator will help to develop, foster, and manage a network that connects NU faculty, staff, students with students, teachers, and administrators at partner schools, in support of the schools’ STEM educational needs. This includes developing and implementing academic year, in-school programs (e.g., STEM classroom activities, academic tutoring) out-of-school programs (e.g. STEM clubs, field trips), summer programming for students and/or educators, and teacher professional learning programs aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.
Please note: Position may involve a substantial amount of time spent off-campus at school sites across the metropolitan area, as well as transit to/from these sites. Access to a car is required.
Acts as a primary point-of-contact and resource ombudsman between Northwestern University (NU) and CPS administrators, teachers, and students at Mather and Lake View High Schools. In collaboration with Director and Associate Director, works to directly support each schools’ strategic plan for STEM curriculum and instruction, both in-school and out-of-school. Includes the coordination, training, and support of NU’s human capital resources (faculty, staff and students), partnerships, and academic resources. Also includes new program development, refinement of existing programs, and evaluation activities associated with the above scope of work.
Provides teacher professional development and pedagogical support: works with CPS network and school-based teacher leaders to build STEM teaching capacity through strategic, ongoing teacher professional development initiatives. Includes leveraging existing NU teacher training programs (School of Education and Social Policy) and creating new programs as appropriate to support each school in reaching its instructional goals. An important component of this responsibility is providing classroom support and feedback for teachers as they learn Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned instructional practices. Ensures that teacher professional development is aligned with state and district science, math, and literacy standards.
Hires, manages, trains, and supports five full-time STEM fellows, each of whom is appointed for a 10-month period (August-June) to provide mentoring, tutoring, and academic support for students during the school day and afterschool. Supports and supervises the relationships of STEM fellows with high school staff, administrators and students.
Manages day-to-day project operations – including student recruitment, program delivery, partnership meetings, program evaluation and data analysis - ensuring project goals and deadlines are met. Facilitates communication between various project leads and stakeholders in distributed sites and organizations.
Drafts comprehensive reports and makes formal presentations to internal and external stakeholders based on project accomplishments.
Coordinates IRB processes and human subject research procedures in compliance with institutional and federal guidelines as needed.
Other related duties as assigned.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Five or more years’ experience in an educational setting as a K-12 teacher, educator, instructor, curriculum developer and/or program manager/coordinator.
Two years’ experience with NGSS-aligned teacher training and classroom support
Post-secondary educational training in STEM subject areas (chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, math, etc.)
Demonstrated experience in grade 9-12 STEM program development, mentoring and coaching (in school and/or out-of-school)
Experience working with and building partnerships between diverse community stakeholders (K-12, academia, community organizations, foundations, etc.).
Previous supervisory experience.

High level of initiative and commitment to improving the quality of STEM education in underserved high schools
Adaptability to new situations and ability to develop/implement/evaluate new programs.
Ability to work in teams of people from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels.
Master’s degree or higher in either a STEM discipline or in science education.
IL teaching certification, with experience teaching STEM subjects at the high school level.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Familiarity with academic STEM research approaches and methodologies.
Experience with statistical software (SPSS, R, STATA, JMP, etc.)
