PROGRAM: Employment Program & TransLife Care Center (TLC) POSITION TITLE: TransWorks Career Specialist Summary Statement: The primary role of the TransWorks Career Specialist is to address individual and systemic barriers to employment for transgender, gender non-conforming and genderqueer participants. The TransWorks Career Specialist will provide career counseling services to assist clients in reaching individual employment goals. The TransWorks Career Specialist will also work with a group of professional mentors and employers to promote systemic, sustainable change for the community, and will staff weekly job clubs during TransSafe drop-in hours.
Manage an assigned caseload of participants who identify as transgender, gender non- conforming and/or genderqueer.
Assess prospective participants’ ability to become employed and, in cooperation with participants, develop an initial work plan that identifies personal and career goals.
Provide career counseling and assist in the development of short/long term employment goals.
Coordinate referrals to related supportive services, including case management, housing, mental health services, substance use services, medical services, etc.
Meet at least weekly with program participants to review and monitor progress towards completing short-term and long-term goals identified in individual service plans and revise individual service plans when appropriate.
Recruit participants for the TransWorks program.
Develop and maintain relationships with potential employers for job placement.
Recruit professional mentors from the community for the TransWorks Program.
Plan and facilitate monthly mentorship meetings.
Facilitate TransWorks at Heartland Alliance on Mondays from 2:30-5:30
Co-facilitate quarterly job readiness workshops at the Center on Halsted.
Maintain record keeping procedures which include writing daily case notes on participants' progress, participants’ employment status and completing monthly reports.
Update required data on a timely basis within the Access database.
Compliance with required employment and TLC grant scopes.
Convey harm reduction and trauma informed care strategies when engaging with participants.
Meet with TransWorks Program Manager weekly for supervision.
Participate in weekly Employment Program Team Meetings and monthly IDT meetings with the TLC staff.
Attend Chicago House staff meetings as required.
Represent Chicago House at meetings and functions addressing workforce development issues, and employment and retention issues.
Additional duties as assigned by supervisor and Employment Program Director.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: TransWorks Program Manager CLASSIFICATION STATUS: Exempt
Familiarity/experience with transgender community and local services.
Minimum of 2 years working in employment services or related social services is required.
Familiarity with HIV/AIDS, Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Post-Correctional care preferred.
Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organization and documentation skills.
Team oriented work style.
Trans and gender non-conforming applicants are strongly encouraged.
