Reporting to the Director, SRLF & Collaborative Shared Print Programs, the Imaging Services Manager (ISM) manages the activities involved in the production of preservation-quality digital reproductions of research collections and archive materials including circulating and rare books, manuscripts, correspondence, newspapers, photographic collections, ephemera, art work, and maps. The ISM professionally represents the department in a variety of environments within UCLA, the entire UC system, the Cultural Heritage imaging community and the general public. The ISM works with members of the UCLA Library to evaluate potential new digitization projects and manages existing projects, workflows and schedules. The ISM meets with patrons in the UCLA Libraries, UC academic departments, and non-UC institutions to review a complex mix of digitization projects and provide cost estimates for all requests. The Imaging Service Unit operates under a Sales and Service [cost recovery] model and thus the ISM is responsible for ensuring that a steady stream of in-coming work is available. The ISM is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training and supervision of 4 career FTE. Coordinates and schedules in-coming jobs with other work in progress, assigning work to staff; and oversees all aspects of production: digitization of print and photographic originals, and providing detailed quality control inspections of all products. The ISM is responsible for ensuring that all digitized images meet the guidelines and standards for preservation imaging as defined by the Library of Congress and FADGI. The ISM develops Imaging Services Unit goals, and identifies opportunities for training and development of career staff in order to keep the Imaging Services team fully knowledgeable about and capable of implementing new technologies and software programs that enhance digital services.
The Imaging Services Unit provides digitization services for a variety of customers, including UCLA library staff, UC staff and faculty, external clients facilitated through the UCLA Library Special Collections (LSC) and the general public. Digital images can be captured from print and non-print research collections, including circulating and rare books, manuscripts, photographs, transmissive materials, microfilm, newspapers, ephemera and maps. Imaging Specialists handle fragile, deteriorating original materials and using a variety of software programs and advanced techniques will capture clear, distortion-free images that are true in color, exposure, and composition to the originals. Digital scanning equipment available in the Unit includes flatbed and planetary scanners and medium format cameras with a variety of megapixel resolution settings. SRLF's Imaging Services Unit produces on average over 100,000 digital image files annually. The Unit currently produces 70,000 frames of original microfilm per year but that number is declining steadily.
The Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF) houses low-use library materials from the five southern University of California (UC) campuses, and also houses the University of California Shared Print Archive. Located on the northwest corner of campus, the SRLF provides environmentally controlled high-density shelving for books, archives, and other library materials. Phase 1 and 2 Stacks have a combined capacity of approximately 7 million volume equivalents, and SRLF currently holds approximately 6.8 million volume equivalents.
Educational background in photography or imaging science at the Bachelors or equivalent level.
Significant project management skills, including but not limited to strategic planning, organizing workflows to accomplish established objectives, ability to manage multiple deadlines, conduct appropriate outreach to stakeholder communities at beginning and end of projects.
Advanced working knowledge of archival quality imaging equipment including but not limited to flatbed, film, and planetary scanners as well as medium format digital cameras.
Advanced knowledge of digital photography including exposure, aperture and shutter functions, ISO, depth of field, focus and composition. Advanced knowledge of studio lighting including strobes and continuous light sources. Ability to perform routine calibration of digital scanners and computer monitors.
Ability to perform image editing such as exposure adjustments, color adjustments, and cropping using programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge and Capture One.
Ability to effectively capture 3-d objects and artifacts, printed materials, artwork such as paintings and drawings, maps, and other flat documents using digital imaging equipment and studio lighting.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiatives (FADGI) and other appropriate cultural heritage imaging standards.
Experience in supervision, including hiring, orienting, training, organizing workflows, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, and coaching and counseling.
Outstanding organizational and analytical skills to balance multiple (and sometimes conflicting) priorities, lead complex projects, and perform efficiently and courteously amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
