If you have a passion for social justice, and would like to take on a job of assisting the recruitment and retention of underrepresented communities in the field of librarianship, this might be the job for you. The Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS) of the American Library Association uses a social justice model to address and develop in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion; literacy; and outreach services. The Member Services Assistant -a full-time position based in our Chicago office, reports to the Director of the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services. The successful candidate will work with ALA leadership, staff, and members. The three primary areas of focus are:
Supporting the Spectrum Scholarship Program. Spectrum actively recruits and provides scholarships to American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Middle Eastern and North African, and/or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students to assist them with obtaining a graduate degree and leadership positions within the profession and ALA.
Supporting the activities and initiatives of four ALA roundtables: Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT); Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT); Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT); Sustainability Round Table (SustainRT).
Support of ODLOS projects and programs. This includes updating and maintaining the ODLOS online presence including our website, #LibrariesRespond resources, toolkits, and literacy clearinghouse.
Minimum one to three years of experience as an administrative assistant with knowledge of event planning. Some college preferred. Strong customer service orientation. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines is critical. Some comfort level with technology, particularly WordPress (or similar). Drupal familiarity would also be very useful. Experience and/or interest in social justice and working with diverse communities is a definite plus.
This position requires travel to the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference
Additional Salary Information: Starting salary range is from the low 30s; negotiable based on experience and qualifications. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation and a retirement annuity.
