The Academic Technology group supports teaching, learning, and research across schools and units at Harvard. Reporting to the Associate Director of Tools & Development, the Software Engineer will work as part of an Agile team to build, maintain, and support web-based software and services related to the pedagogical mission of the University. The Agile team is dedicated to the priorities established by the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning Research Group, which is working to advance the science of learning and ensure that Harvard remains a leader in teaching and learning innovation.
The Software Engineer participates in all aspects of the software development life-cycle, including gathering client requirements, designing software architecture, implementing backend and client-side code, performing quality assurance, assisting in deployment, maintaining releases, and writing technical documentation. The Software Engineer also evaluates the feasibility of adapting technologies into existing services, where appropriate. The Software Engineer accomplishes these tasks by adhering to organizational standards and industry best practices, including those for Agile software development, security, performance, scalability, usability, and accessibility.
The ideal candidate works best within a team environment, is a self-starter, is capable of handling multiple projects, and is committed to quickly delivering high-quality software within deadlines. The candidate demonstrates flexibility with regards to development platform, as well as an ability to adapt to new development languages and libraries. The ideal candidate exhibits a great interest in researching, experimenting, evaluating, and presenting the latest in technology and how it might be suitable for existing services.
