Duties include training/application/technical development of large and growing # of techniques: Including optical fiber manufacturing, construction of peripheral light delivery systems, DIY equipment assembly, software programming (e.g., Anymaze, MedPC, Arduino, Radiant, etc.), stereotaxic brain surgery and targeted peripheral surgery (viral injections, cannula or optical fiber implantation, intravenous catheterization, ovariectomies, etc.), vaginal cytology, western blot, immunohistochemistry, light microscopy, transgenic mice, weaning/genotyping, optogenetics, fiber photometry, physiology, fMRI, behavioral assays (rodent drug self-administration, intracranial self-stimulation, locomotor activity, place preference assays, forced swim test, tail suspension test, elevated plus maze, novel object recognition task, rotorod, balance beam, gait analysis, Barnes maze, Morris water maze, etc.).
• Supervision and management of technical staff (1-5) in MnDRIVE optogenetics core and lab of Mark Thomas. Training and Mentoring of Students (5-10). Management and maintenance of MnDRIVE optogenetic core facility • Oversight of research program of grant-funded projects for faculty principle investigator (2-5) • Serve as Co-investigator on NIH-funded grants (2) • Serve as technical lead for PI- and MnDRIVE-related projects (5-10). Responsible for carrying out leadership roles on grants. Pilot data collection, and project development • Serve as consultant for optogenetics core clients (10-20) • Assist with administrative protocol submissions (e.g., IACUC, IBC, MTAs, etc.). Develop customized protocols, surgical approaches, equipment, and medical devices for faculty. Expanding established protocols, tools, and software to an online format (website for registered user access, both within and outside of the university). • Conduct academic research including literature searches, experimental design, animal surgery, data acquisition, data analysis, data presentation, and manuscript writing. Analyze, interpret, and report scientific data in local and national scientific meeting and peer-reviewed publications. • Assist with teaching and community outreach initiatives. Present research and technology demonstrations at local and national conferences and events • Research application to include both central and peripheral nervous systems. Medical device development and customized biotechnology integration and application • Service to both MnDRIVE and UMnCAN as well as the assistance to UMnCAN facility development • Function independently and interacts with institute/department heads/directors to coordinate goals and initiatives and report progress/metrics. Help to manages budgets, makes decisions on what products and equipment are most needed
Requires PhD in Neuroscience and more than 10 years of relevant postdoctoral training experience. A strong background in behavioral neuroscience and optogenetics is required, as well as tangible evidence of productivity in the form of research publications, and a established commitment to mentoring less-experienced scientists.
