Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Advanced Practice Nurse for the APN's/Clinicians department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Advanced nursing practice is the utilization of professional nursing knowledge. Advanced Practice Nurse (APNs) function as advanced practice professionals in expanded roles. This requires collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to provide for assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Care is provided to oncology patients in the ambulatory and hospital settings (pending privileging process). The Advanced Practice Nurse will work within a multidisciplinary unit that is designed to meet the needs of specialized cancer populations; i.e., disease-specific settings. The major responsibilities include expanded patient assessment, triage, coordination and documentation of care to a specified group of adult patients older than 18 years of age. This includes care of adults at various developmental stages including geriatrics. The Nurse Practice and the Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist Acts of the State of New Jersey define the scope of the position and adherence to the policies and Standard Operating Procedures set forth by the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Performs comprehensive initial and episodic health histories and physical exams; in order to identify existing or potential health problems.
Initiates and implements an individualized nursing and medical plan of care in collaboration with members of interdisciplinary team.
Initiates appropriate diagnostic, therapeutic, medical and nursing actions in conjunction with physician.
Provides follow-up care including acute and routine examinations.
Assesses progress, identifies problems, initiates preventive measures, recognizes emergent problems, initiates proper care in collaboration with physician.
Monitors and adjusts patients' medication according to protocol or medical plan of care including adequate pain control.
Implements nutritional therapies, as appropriate.
Triages patient problem calls in office, which require medical attention, Monday through Friday.
Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
Recognizes normal and abnormal laboratory findings and the pathology involved.
Documents information in patients' charts following documentation standards established by the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Demonstrates in depth oncology specific, as well as general medical-surgical knowledge base
Minimum Education and Experience:
Licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of New Jersey. Certified as a Nurse Practitioner with specialization in Oncology.
At least two (2) years of nursing experience in the Oncology specialty area in a hospital or clinic setting, preferably in an Advanced Practice role.
American Heart Association: Basic Cardiac Life Support.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Possesses own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Physical Demands: Walking, sitting, standing, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
Work Environment: Clinical setting includes exposure to blood excrement, antineoplastic drugs, and exposure to infectious and communicable diseases.
