Maintains shifts with total responsibility for the operation of the assigned Central Heating Plant equipment including the co-generation of electricity. Will work 12-hourrotatingshift; three consecutive days one week, four consecutive the next. Includes nights, weekends, holidays.
The Operator Provides for the safe, efficient operation of the Central Heating Plant and campus distribution system. Operates, inspects, repairs, and overhauls boilers, turbines, steam generators, air compressors, receivers, pumps, controls, filters, valves, meters, and all other equipment located at the Central Heating Station, and all other areas under the jurisdiction of Division 7. Reads meters and gauges, changes charts, replaces pen and ink supplies, changes gauge glasses, and rebuilds same. Adjusts operating controls to maintain safe and efficient operating conditions. Start and stop boilers, turbines, and all auxiliary machinery as required for safe, efficient operations. Operates switch gear in the Central Heating Station . Directs the chemical analysis of water treatment program; orders fuel oil as required. Maintains the power plan log data, interpret results, initiate action, and report to chief Engineer or his designee. Fill out daily reading sheets, make required rounds per shift scheduled, and follow daily turnover processes and procedures.
Requires High School diploma/GED - trade school preferred, three yearsâ?? experience operating a high pressure steam heating and power plant; Stationary Operating Engineerâ??s License for the City of Providence; Rhode Island Journeyman Pipefitterâ??s License preferred. Requires a thorough knowledge of steam/heating and power plant operations, including operation of high temperature hot water distribution systems, a steam turbo generator, and electrical switch gear. Valid motor vehicle operatorâ??s license is required. Experience with CMMS preferred. Must have the physical ability to walk throughout the campus and to climb stairs for the duration of the work period. Must be physically able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Ability to climb and work from ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and staging heights up to 100 feet. Ability to work without restrictions for 12-hour shift.
