Requisition # 2017-7246 Department PPPL Advanced Projects Category Research and Laboratory Date Posted 7/6/2017 Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time Application Deadline 8/31/2017
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) of Princeton University invites applications for a post-doctoral research position that will support the ongoing collaboration between PPPL and the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator located in Greifswald, Germany. PPPL is the lead US institution in a larger US W7-X collaboration that includes partners from ORNL, LANL, University of Wisconsin, Auburn University and MIT as well as private industry participation from Xantho Technologies. The applicant will be expected to spend extended periods onsite in Greifswald in support of experimental activities. W7-X is a state-of-the-art superconducting fusion confinement device intended to operate under near steady-state condition with pulse lengths up to 30 minutes in fusion relevant conditions-multi-kilovolt temperatures with plasma densities in the range of several times 10 20 m -3 .
Participate in the installation and use of the powder dropper and help develop it as a tool for plasma edge studies.
Participate in experiments on W7-X once the technology is deployed.
Take an active role in analyzing plasma material interactions on W7-X and participate in the ongoing US collaboration in this area.
The successful applicant will have a Ph.D in the area of experimental plasma physics in fusion devices or a related field. Knowledge of plasma diagnostic techniques, plasma-wall interaction physics, and/or data acquisition methods is desired, as, is knowledge of existing analysis techniques for stellarator edge plasma modeling. Ability to work in an international team environment is critical.
