The Wood Shop/MakerSpace Manager brings a blend of design thinking, making, and hacking of physical things with an aptitude for managing, coaching, and teaching smart, highly creative people. Provides high-level technical and maintenance support in the wood shop and MakerSpace. Tasks performed with a high level of autonomy include: maintaining all equipment in good working order, facilitating all repairs, and making recommendations for replacement or additional equipment; ordering and restocking all raw materials for the wood shop and MakerSpace; instructing faculty members and students on the safe and efficient use of equipment and materials, maintaining clean and orderly work areas, and securing areas or materials that may pose danger to students; building storage or other support materials used in classroom instruction. A core group to be served by the position and the space is the Art Department’s Studio Arts program. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
At least five years of experience in woodworking and maintaining a wood shop with knowledge of woodworking tools, machines, techniques, and processes.
Should have experience and skills in one or more of these areas, and a willingness to develop skills in the areas in which candidate is not already proficient: electronics prototyping, 3D design and fabrication, sewing and textiles, or other types of making.
Software and hardware skills should include some combination of: Adobe Creative Suite; 3D modeling/creation tools (SolidWorks, Autodesk apps, CAM software); Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or other microcontrollers; 3D scanning; photography; sewing machines and weaving, CNC machines, the Internet of Things.
Extensive knowledge of and experience with managing training and safety in a Wood Shop/MakerSpace environment.
Knowledge of maker culture and passion about creating and maintaining that culture at Swarthmore.
Required Education and Experience:
Ability to leverage or develop relationships with campus partners (including the Lang Center, Center for Innovation and Leadership, Academic Departments), local makers, artists, hackerspaces and Colleges/Universities
Ability to support Studio Arts including Sculpture being taught in the space.
Ability to work with others to foster and support a culture of making on campus.
