On any given day, you may be called on to: + Apply fundamental process, physical and chemical principles to create coatings that meet customer requirements+ Develop and conduct research programs involving thin films, vacuum systems, and related technologies+ Develop technical solutions to challenging problems usually working on a team+ Interact with a variety of customers Required: + Master's or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related STEM discipline+ Bachelor's in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related STEM discipline+ Two years' relevant experience+ Experience with materials and process characterization techniques, and process\-structure\-property relationships+ Experience with Physical Vapor Deposition Techniques+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance Desired: + Experience with ALD, HiPIMS, and/or Reactive Deposition+ Knowledge of functional coatings technology including electrical, optical, and tribological+ Hands\-on experience with custom built sputtering, evaporation, and vacuum systems+ Experience using CAD programs to design masks and fixtures, e\.g\. SolidWorks+ Excellent communication skills+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team+ PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline Department Description: The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories\. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation\. Thin film properties can also be characterized\. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional \(flame, plasma, twin\-wire arc, HVOF\) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low pressure plasma spray\. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso\-scale devices, electrical discharge machining \(EDM\), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro\-metrology, as well as technical consulting\. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write \(aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing\) and metal additive \(powder bed and LENS\)\.
