The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine - Institute for Global Health (IGH) is currently recruiting for a Lead Laboratory Research Specialist. The Lead Laboratory Research Specialist is responsible for all functions in a single or multiple laboratories setting providing guidance and technical expertise to research project(s) and overseeing the laboratory(s) research activities. This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities.

Performs laboratory research activities related with the measurements of immune responses (primarily antibodies) using a variety of assays. Performs tissue culture. Performs functional antibody assays (i.e. virus neutralization, hemagglutination assays). Purifies cells and performs cell analysis. Independently oversee laboratory maintenance and research activities required by the study(s). Lead the development and execution of projects.
Revise studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.
Provide day-to-day laboratory operations oversight including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implements effective solutions.
Assemble and assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications. Present research findings.
Conduct library research and prepares manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Prepare material for journal articles and grant proposals.
Perform various duties such that may include: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; develops policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
Perform other related duties as required.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, immunology, microbiology or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Five (5) years experience in laboratory research including three (3) years in the relevant research specialization (e.g., immunology, immune measurements).
Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.* May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
* Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the laboratory, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research laboratory.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Ability to conduct literature search, participate in preparation of reports, protocols and journal articles.
