The Center for Game Science (CGS) at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Project Manager. Our goal at CGS is to advance games and education research and to find solutions to currently unsolved problems in science and education by combining human and computer problem solving skills. CGS brings together leading computer scientists, learning scientists, scientific domain experts, and software developers for the purpose of producing widely distributed games and software tools that advance scientific discovery and revolutionize educational practices.
As Project Manager, you will coordinate research and development activity under Professor Zoran Popovic's direction. You will directly supervise UW paid staff, conduct employee performance evaluations, and hire and supervise temporary support staff as needed; set priorities and schedules for accomplishing work; manage day-to-day partnerships with collaborators from industry and other universities; create regular status reports for funding organizations and for external messaging; and organize and participate in the grant writing and application process.
You must be able to work in a self-directed and independent way, synthesizing the goals and culture in both the academic research environment and the development of widely-distributed online software. Flexibility to adapt to changing research priorities is a must, as is the ability to quickly absorb and disseminate new information as directions change or new opportunities arise. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also required.
Responsibilities will include the following:
Create and implement realistic and flexible project development plans, schedules and staffing plans in conjunction with CGS leadership and staff;
Run the day-to-day of multiple software development teams using agile methodologies,
Track performance and conduct annual performance evaluations;
Work with professors, grad students, and staff researchers to write grant applications and track their status;
Act as a liaison between the lab director and University administrative groups such as UW's Office of Sponsored Programs and IRB as well as the Computer Science and Engineering department's HR and IT groups;
Clearly communicate project status, plans, and risks, both verbally and in writing, including in the preparation of multiple progress reports for external parties;
Work with program manager on budget forecasting and tracking;
Represent CGS to the public at events or in writing, explaining in lay language the research intent of multiple ongoing areas of investigation.
4-year college degree and a minimum of 4 to 5 years of research management or software development management experience required. Experience in a research environment and/or an interest in education technology are plusses.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
