Unity College is a private, liberal arts, sustainability science-based institution with an environmental focus. The Grants Officer serves as the College's grants manager and primary writer for all funding proposals as deemed appropriate depending on content topic, and is responsible for building successful relationships with current and prospective corporate, foundation, and government organizations that will result in significant contributions to the College and strengthen scholarly efforts across all academic disciplines. The Grants Officer will manage organizational prospects from research/identification through solicitation/stewardship to advance Unity College's priorities and programs and create policies that will enhance campus management of grant proposals. Specific duties include (but are not all inclusive):
Develop profiles on new foundations, federal, state, and local government agencies, and corporations, and updates profiles of foundations, federal, state, and local government agencies, and corporations with which the College has existing relationships.
Researches foundations to match interests of foundations with funding priorities of the College. Identifies individual contacts within the foundation that are connected to the College. Manages the outreach by the College to foundations.
Prepares all letters of intent to apply and grant proposals including budgets.
Researches funding opportunities at the federal, state, and local government levels to determine if there is a project at Unity College that matches the agency's criteria.
Works directly with various campus constituents on gathering information for special project proposals including scope and budgetary requirements in preparation of writing grant proposals, as well as follow-up reports, as needed.
Maintains professional networks for purposes of resource sharing and potential corporate and foundation prospect identification.
Prepares and maintains the Unity College Case Statements and information about various potential funding opportunities to be used by the Development team, with the support of the Marketing Department.
Updates the Development website as needed.
Maintains a library of resources and keeps abreast of new sources of information.
Keeps current with local, regional and national news and events as they relate to College Relations and specifically to Unity College prospects. Stays current with changes in technology and research resources as they relate to information management.
Provides high-quality grant writing and report writing, creating budgets for, reviewing, and editing proposals and letters of inquiry for corporations and foundations following guidelines, parameters, and procedures. Ensures accuracy and completeness of all foundation gift records and reporting, drawing upon campus expertise and high-level written concepts to make a strong case for the College's grant request. Research and compile pertinent institutional information for projects requiring funding.
Designs and maintains a comprehensive program of research to identify prospective foundations, their giving interest, board members, and Unity College relationships. Assemble a busy grants calendar and solicitation plan to produce a sufficient number and quality of prospects.
Conduct cultivation and solicitation strategies for new and previously identified foundations, and their executive directors and board members.
Ensures timely acknowledgement and appropriate expressions of appreciation of all foundation gifts.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree or at least 10 years experience as a successful grants writer. Three to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess impeccable communication skills, both verbal and written; exemplify a professional demeanor; a positive attitude; and the knowledge and ability to keep confidences. Strong working knowledge of Email, Microsoft Word, Excel and Access is needed. Must be VERY detail orientated and possess strong organizational skills. Must have the ability to solve problems using logic and analytical skills. A knowledge of best practices in proposal development is required along with the ability to conduct research. Must possess an understanding of branding and positioning strategies for the institution and for specific projects and the ability to "ghost-write" for various College administrators, staff, and volunteers. Ability to learn subject-specific terminology for use in developing written materials is a must as well as the knowledge of when and how to use various channels of communication. Must possess creative ability; strong ability in planning and organization; demonstrated track record of highly successful solicitations; and the ability to handle diverse types of work assignments.
This position is primarily day shift with some evening and extended hours required as needed. Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling responsibilities and in meeting the college's needs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
