Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Public Relations Specialist to provide support to The University Press. This position will be responsible for creating publicity and promotional campaigns for all books published by Rutgers University Press. The goal of these campaigns is to generate effective and significant print, broadcast, and electronic media: articles, reviews, and social media interest, to raise consumer awareness, among both scholarly and general interest readers, to raise the profile of the Press in our core publishing disciplines, the scholarly community, and in the book world, as well as at Rutgers and in the region, and ultimately, to increase sales. The key duties of this position are the following:
Prepares publicity and promotional plans for each title published, working with press staff, especially the editors and marketing team to position and "pitch" each title to maximize media coverage.
Writes press releases, develops media and potential reviewer lists.
Coordinates seasonal catalogs, advertising, and social media planning working as a team with others in the department.
Determines the number of review copies to be sent for each book.
Selects books to create galleys, e-ARCs, blads and other marketing materials as needed for each of the titles on the seasonal list.
Meets with authors, editors, and Sales & Marketing Director, as needed to discuss and review publicity plans, positioning and create additional "buzz."
Manages a budget for all publicity and advertising activities.
Recommends and manages freelance publicists which may be required on a few priority titles each season.
Assists in obtaining endorsement "blurbs" to be used in the seasonal catalog and in back cover copy for the book and consults on cover design issues with other press staff.
Works with colleagues, Sales & Marketing Director, Editorial Director and Director on strategy and special projects from time to time as needed.
Expands and maintains contact with key media and reviewers at media outlets which correlate to the press's major lists and key titles.
Makes media visits each season — including NJ, and NY, and possibly, Boston and DC and make appointments with other media nationwide in conjunction with exhibit travel.
Maintains contact with media connections, editors and reviewers via telephone and email when it is not possible to meet with them in person.
Expands and maintains media contacts with key international media when appropriate, working with our international sales force and the Marketing & Sales Director.
Follows up via email and phone on requests for review copies, story and article ideas, and interview requests.
Follows up on significant media reviews, coverage, and/or events to re-promote titles as needed.
Updates and maintains internal media database and CRM, utilizes industry outreach tools and databases.
Supervises interns who may assist on mailings, calls, emails, social media efforts, events, or data entry.
Assists authors in utilizing their contacts and networks to generate media and reviews and arrange book events such as signings, readings and launch parties and may coach authors when appropriate for media interviews or public talks, developing talking points, "hooks," or positioning.
Attends local author events, book sales and press publicity events as necessary. Some evening and weekends required.
Works with the webmaster and marketing colleagues to maintain press website, including public event calendar, and helps create other electronic promotional tools for individual books such as book trailers, podcasts, social media initiatives, etc.
Keeps abreast of various media as well as new and changing publicity and promotional dynamics within our core subject areas, the industry, the academic world, the university press community, the region, and the Rutgers community, including new and emerging media trends, such as key blogs, opinion makers and the like.
Performs various other tasks and duties as assigned to support Rutgers University Press.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's degree in public relations, marketing, communication, journalism, English, a related field, or the equivalent.
Also requires a minimum of two years relevant experience in public relations or promotions/event planning function.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
Requires expertise in social media and broad understanding of media trends.
Experience in planning and project management required.
Must be computer literate with industry standard software including Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Adobe Creative Suite, and Windows/iOS platforms.
Two or more years in experience in publicity or marketing, ideally in trade or scholarly book publishing, including a well-developed list of media contacts and experience pitching to such contacts preferred.
Knowledge of the academic marketplace, experience in industry specific platforms and some of the fields and regions in which we publish, as well as some familiarity with various publishing database preferred.
Knowledge of CRM software and/or database software, such as Filemaker or Access a plus.
The Press-wide database is Firebrand.
Marketing department members use Edelweiss, an industry standard catalog and promotional platform, and Cision media database.
