The Office of Insurance and Risk Management at Virginia Tech has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Director. Reporting to the Director of Risk Management, the Assistant Director will investigate, evaluate and manage insurance claims involving property, automobiles and liability and maintain all applicable records, loss and claim data. Compile and maintain all documentation to support claims. Will manage and maintain systems for the collection and analysis of exposure and loss data, insured property, insured autos and certificates of insurance and maintain all applicable records loss and claim data. Will work with insurance carriers and government agencies as appropriate. Have fiduciary responsibility for university self-insured insurance program funding and recoveries. Will assist university units with insurance programs and procedures, development of risk management strategies. Will respond to requests for insurance certification in support of university programs. Will provide appropriate insurance certifications. Will provide review and recommendations for risk management contractual issues. Will provide technical expertise and guidance to university entities regarding scope and applicability of Commonwealth and university coverage. Will provide risk management program training and assist in the development of program goals that support departmental and institutional strategic objectives.
Must have an advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree or a Bachelor's degree and professional training or certifications; working knowledge of property and casualty and automobile insurance policies and the insurance claims process; experience using automated financial systems such as the Banner Finance System; strong computer skills and experience with a variety of computer software such as word processing, spreadsheet and database applications; excellent communications skills and the ability to deal with a variety of people under stressful situations; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; excellent organizational skills.
Professional risk management designations, including Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or similar industry designation; prior experience in employee health and safety programs, insurance, or risk management environment; experience with legal issues in insurance claims, insurance coverage and contractual risk transfer; familiarity with the Commonwealth of Virginia self-insurance program or similar experience in a public entity setting; prior experience in the administrative or facilities area of a large university.
