This senior leadership position reports directly to the President, and is a member of the President's Cabinet. The Vice President serves at the pleasure of the President as an administrative faculty member. The Vice President is responsible for leading and propelling VCU and VCU Health System's research and innovation enterprise to new heights, bringing experience and strength in best practice internal processes that support research.
As the university's leader for research and innovation, this position will provide strategic and operational leadership as VCU continues to ascend to higher levels in research and innovation. The Vice President will be responsible for ensuring that VCU faculty and staff have the resources, information, and training needed to continue to produce the most cutting edge research; are competitive in securing external funding; are provided opportunities to work collaboratively across disciplines, nationally and internationally; have the tools to develop world-class scholarship, research and creative expression; and are equipped to advance contributions to the community at large. The Vice President will also be expected to seek out emerging opportunities, develop new initiatives and research directions to promote and enhance the contributions to new knowledge as well as advance VCU's national standing in research.
The Vice President will work closely with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Health Sciences, the deans of the colleges and schools, and with individual faculty on all campuses to promote the value of high-impact, scholarly research and innovation.
This position oversees research policy, programs, activities, and personnel under the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and its various areas to include: Institutes and Centers, Research Cores, Research Quest Fund, Grant Academy, Research Development, Undergraduate Research, Postdoctoral Services, Technology Transfer, VCU Innovation Gateway, and Research Integrity and Compliance.
The Vice President serves as the university's top administrator for research and innovation, reporting directly to the president of VCU. The Vice President works to strengthen the research mission in alignment with VCU's strategic plan and promote the vision of the research enterprise within the university community as well as to internal and external constituents. The Vice President develops partnerships and agreements with governmental, industry, and other potential funding sources that will lead to the expansion of research projects
The Vice President oversees the development and implementation of policies and procedures that support a large and diverse faculty in the responsible conduct of research, scholarship, and creative expression. The Vice President develops strategies to promote cutting-edge research and scholarship while reducing the burden of grants administration on faculty. The Vice President facilitates integration of cross-campus, national, and international entrepreneurial efforts
The Vice President oversees the personnel in a large administrative office, including personnel in its centers and programs to include: Institutes and Centers, Research Cores, Research Quest Fund, Grant Academy, Research Development, Undergraduate Research, Postdoctoral Services, Technology Transfer, VCU Innovation Gateway, and Research Integrity and Compliance. The Vice President leads through inspirational example and must gain the professional confidence of the unit research and innovation staffs.
An earned doctorate from an accredited university in a discipline related to research and innovation.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
The Vice President for Research and Innovation should have a proven track record of creative and energetic problem solving with demonstrated ability to identify and create innovative approaches to increasing research activities. The Vice President must provide collaborative, respectful, and highly inclusive leadership. The Vice President will have exceptional integrity, intelligence, and maturity; be experienced with complex organizational initiatives; and be comfortable in a public university environment, with demonstrated appreciation for faculty, student, and staff interests. In addition, the successful candidate will possess most, if not all of the following qualities and/or experience:
A deep appreciation for the mission and aspirations of VCU and the vision of the President; the ability to effectively articulate the President's vision to the University's key stakeholders
Successful scientific or scholarly achievement sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured full professor in an appropriate academic unit of the university
A strong record of sponsored research leadership
Understanding of current and emerging issues in research, innovation, and technology in institutions of higher education
Demonstrated record of creating entrepreneurial initiatives and willingness to take considered risks and seize opportunities
Understanding of importance of compliance with regulatory laws, policies, and procedures as it relates to a research enterprise
Demonstrated experience developing and promoting high impact, interdisciplinary and cross-campus research as well as national, and international collaborations
Ability to promote and foster the development of high impact, interdisciplinary and cross-campus research proposals and activities utilizing the intellectual power of the university
Experience relating to external constituencies such as governing and coordinating boards, legislative bodies, public agencies, funding agencies, alumni, and donors
Strong and demonstrated commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students, as well as in scholarship
An innovative and global orientation
Superb interpersonal and communication skills and political savvy
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage people and support professional development
A desire to work with academic areas so that research is not separate from academics and academic health sciences, but is integrated into academics
