Announcement: ODOT17-1560oc Work Zone Traffic Control Designer – Associate in Engineering 2 Highway Division – Region 2 Technical Center Salem
ODOT's Region 2 Traffic Unit delivers the region's multi-million dollar transportation program and provides support for highway operations and safety. The Traffic Unit is responsible and accountable for providing technical analysis, operational assistance and coordination, and data support services to planning, project development, construction, and operational and maintenance activities conducted through the Region 2 office and the district offices in Region 2.
ODOT is recruiting for a work zone traffic control designer. This position designs and prepares work zone traffic control plans for Region 2 projects under the guidance of the region traffic engineer and senior work zone traffic control designer. The lead engineers act as the professionals of record for this position's products. The work zone traffic control designer's workload covers the simple preservation project and the moderately complex multi-lane highway project.

Additional Details: Limited Duration: This is a limited duration appointment that is scheduled to last until 06/30/2019, though the duration can change at any time or could possibly become a permanent position due to business needs. Limited duration appointments are regular status, benefits eligible, with a designated maximum length of service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Design and prepare multi-modal work zone traffic control plans for Region 2 projects under the guidance of lead engineers.
Evaluate bridge and roadway construction problems to develop and implement engineering design solutions.
Analyze construction traffic sequencing and apply advanced methods, materials, techniques, and processes to bring resolutions.
Prepare special provision specifications and cost estimates for projects using non-standard applications to enhance and improve quality of traffic safety for projects.
Participate as a work zone traffic control expert on region project teams to assure proper direction of project from scoping through the end of construction.
Prepare detailed project-level transportation management plans for work zone traffic control designs.
Review and recommend corrections or changes for consultant and local agency work zone traffic control plans and special provisions.
Review and comment on other Region 2 traffic plans for traffic control plans, striping, and signing.
Prepare design and contract plans for other traffic design disciplines such as striping, signals, and signs.
Minimum Qualifications: A Fundamentals of Engineering certificate (FE) and one year of experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods. Special Qualifications: Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Preferred Attributes: We may show preference to candidates whose application materials demonstrate the following.
Experience and knowledge in the development and delivery of transportation projects.
Working knowledge of computer aided design drafting (CADD) software.
Degree in civil engineering.
Work environment involves both office work (90% of the time) and outdoor work.
Outdoor work may involve exposure to heavy traffic conditions and inclement weather.
Regional travel required.
May occasionally drive state passenger vehicle to attend meetings or visit project sites.
