DEPARTMENT MISSION AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility is a Biotechnology Resource Center service facility that provides fee-for-service access to advanced technologies in protein and small molecule identification and characterization through Liquid Chromatographic Mass Spectrometry. Customers of the facility include faculty, researchers, staff and students from Cornell University, Weill Medical College, and external non-profit and for-profit institutions. The position will be part of a high-energy, cutting-edge Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Facility team and requires the ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research in a collaborative setting.
The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility in the development and implementation of various sample preparation techniques and LC-/MS/MS techniques for proteomics and metabolomics analysis, and subsequent MS data interpretation. The incumbent in this position is responsible for LC-MS/MS analyses on a variety of samples prepared from complex biological sources, operation and maintenance of several advanced HPLC and electrospray mass spectrometric instruments, as well as several proteomics-based databasesearch engines . The incumbent will need significant knowledge of MS-associated bioinformatics tools, possess excellent MS data interpretation skills, and be able to routinely perform post-MS analysis data interpretation for customers. The incumbent in this position will be required to perform sample preparation for gel or LC separated proteins prior to MS analysis and able to implement and develop multiple dimensional LC separation for protein samples from complex biological sources.
The incumbent will be required to write a variety of technical and/or project reports to the facility users and collaborative PIs. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the preparation of publications and grant proposals. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. In addition, the incumbent is required to keep a detailed laboratory notebook, contribute to general orderliness of the laboratory and support lab health and safety compliance. The individual will need to supervise junior laboratory staff and facility users including undergraduate, graduate students and researchers. The individual will be required to train some collaborators for multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects as well as participate in lectures, demonstration activities in annual campus-wide MS technology workshop.
This position is a three-year term appointment with the possibility of extension contingent upon continued funding.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
* PhD degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or related discipline
* At least two years LC-MS experience on metabolomics research required with demonstrated understanding of current proteomics technologies.
* Must possess a strong work ethic and self-motivation
* Excellent communication, attention to detail and organizational skills are essential
