Under supervision, performs security duties at library exits and stack entrances, opens, and closes facility. Position will back up open existing coverage and will be asked to cover open shifts at Sterling Memorial Library (SML), Bass Library and Center for Science and Social Science Information Library (CSSSI); possible both day and evening shifts, 7 days per week. Enforces the Library's policies, rules, and procedures with respect to the operations, security, and safety of the Library, its collections, and occupants. Inspects briefcases, parcels, etc., of each person leaving the Library to determine whether they contain library materials. Removes and returns keys. Monitors KeyTrak and Morse Watchman System. Examines books and materials to ascertain that they are properly charged out before being taken from the Library. Enforces all Library rules and regulations, such as: no smoking, no pets, no bicycles, and no food or beverages or consumption of alcohol allowed in Library. Opens, secures, and closes the building as scheduled. Fills out violation reports in cases where attempts are made to remove unauthorized materials from the Library. May ask patrons for appropriate identification for access to stacks or other restricted areas of the Library. Keeps alert for and reports potential or actual problems and violations of Library regulations, which may affect the security of people or property. In the event of a Library emergency, makes sure that the appropriate parties have been contacted (i.e. ambulance, Campus Police, Supervisor, etc.) and awaits the arrival of support help and directs them to the scene of the incident. When not actively engaged with people checking out of the Library, maintains a vigil of the general area around the security post watching for potential problems. Prevents unauthorized removal of library material. Checks vendor and service people for proper identification and authorization to service and/or remove equipment. Reports all building, ground maintenance, and safety issues to the Supervisor/Manager of Operations and Security on a daily basis. Collects special charge slips for materials not normally allowed out of the Library, signs slips, and turns them into the supervisor. Participates in the emergency evacuation of the building. Answers general and directional questions from library users. Opens, secures, and closes the building as scheduled. Will be required to work overtime hours to meet department needs. Performs additional related duties as assigned. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts.
