Seeking a candidate to join a collaborative server infrastructure team for Memorial Sloan Kettering’s enterprise datacenter. The position provides the opportunity to manage enterprise-class Microsoft and VMware platforms using the latest HPE, Cisco, and Dell server hardware, allowing us to provide highly-available solutions that meet our organizational requirements in order to maintain a stable, resilient environment. Evaluating and implementing emerging technologies, developing standards and procedures, and driving projects across platform teams, such as upgrades, migrations, or building new environments to support business applications. Mentoring other administrators as well as assisting design architects in order to balance team skillsets.
Demonstrate enterprise-level expertise in Microsoft Server 2008, 2012, and 2016 operating systems for physical and virtual platforms, including basic server programs.
Exhibit strong server hardware knowledge and hands-on experience, especially HPE Proliant BL/DL lines and their components, c-Class enclosures, Virtual Connect and OneView, as well as HP SPP firmware/driver management principles and best practices.
Knowledge of OS provisioning solutions such as HPE ICSP or DCA, Microsoft SCCM, etc., as well as provisioning methodologies and strategies; both physical and virtual platforms.
Usable Powershell knowledge and/or other scripting languages as method of automating important repetitive tasks.
Provide level 3 technical support for complex Windows and VMware infrastructure issues and provide timely corrective action; engage third-party hardware and software vendor support as necessary.
Possess a strong, broad understanding of networking and SAN technologies and concepts, including expertise in maintaining OS connectivity.
Identify areas where existing configurations, procedures, or policies might require change or be developed to close service gaps.
Capacity plan; Recognize infrastructure resource (disk, VLAN) thresholds and request/expand/suggest purchase to meet demand as required.
Demonstrate enterprise-level expertise in VMware infrastructure methodologies, performance tuning, capacity planning, and issue diagnosis (ESXi images, vSphere 5.x / 4.x host clusters, vCenter, HA, DRS, VDS, AutoDeploy, etc.)
Maintain VMware life cycles including patching, upgrades, and migrations.
Proactively identify system deficiencies and performance bottlenecks by generating system metrics and reports; suggest and execute corrective changes.
Review critical customer platform advisories, assess their potential impact to our existing infrastructure, and suggest steps for remediation.
Assist team architects in the evaluation of new products, solutions, and services.
Provide mentoring, ongoing knowledge transfer and other technical guidance to junior team members.
Develop and maintain policies and procedures, including periodic updates of existing procedures; Maintain all relevant documentation.
Understand VMware SRM and maintain protection of upper-tiered virtual servers.
Ability to work independently and/or in a team setting, and with a high level of attention to detail.
Effectively communicate technical topics with other IT foundational groups, product vendors, management, and stakeholders.
Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks accordingly.
Accurately report progress of assigned tasks; meet commitments and project due dates; effective planning and foresight to mitigate potential delays.
Required participation in rotating 24x7 on-call schedule as level 3 escalation point.
Work occasional non-business hours in support of infrastructure and application maintenance (outages, upgrades, etc.).
10+ years of related IT experience
Minimum 3 years of enterprise datacenter experience as a VMware / Microsoft level 3 system engineer
Excellent verbal / written interpersonal, presentation, and customer service skills
Proficient in core client applications necessary to communicate and document (MS Office, Visio)
Bachelor’s degree in related field
Microsoft MCSE, VMware VCP, certifications
Experience with Dell, Cisco UCS servers and infrastructure
Good scripting and programming skills (PowerShell / PowerCLI)
Experience with leading projects, enterprise-level implementations and proof of concepts in related technologies, collaboration
Knowledge of team-adjacent applications such as AD, DNS, SQL, SharePoint, IIS, XenApp, Avamar, etc.
