The Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology. The Department of Epidemiology is one of seven departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, which is consistently ranked as one of the top public health schools in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. Its epidemiology department was founded in 1936 with a commitment to the conduct and dissemination of exceptional research. The department's primary focus is the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns, causes and outcomes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. It provides strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through research. Active research areas in the department include the epidemiology of cancer, cardiovascular disease, environment/occupation, infectious diseases, injury, prescription drug/other medical interventions, reproductive and pediatric health, social determinants, and genetics; the department's research and impact is both local and global. The achievements of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled the department to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department (http://sph.unc.edu/epid/) consists of 42 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 31 fixed-term faculty, 146 adjunct faculty, 76 professional staff, 174 doctoral students, 30 master’s students and 16 postdocs. For the last fiscal year, the department was responsible for the administration of grants in excess of $23 million. Epidemiology faculty hold grants and contracts valued at over $74 million. Each year, department faculty also provide epidemiology training to several hundred non-majors in classroom and distance education courses.
Education and Experience:
The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure and have an outstanding publication and funding record and international reputation in epidemiology. She or he must have a demonstrated commitment to: professional and public service, interdisciplinary collaboration, promotion of diversity and inclusion, mentoring, and teaching 21st century learners. The candidate should be an innovator with demonstrated leadership, communication and administrative abilities who can help the department articulate its mission and promote strategies that optimize that mission. The applicant should have a proven ability to think and lead strategically, balance multiple priorities, assist with development activities and manage the finances and human resources of a large, dynamic and diverse department. Candidates should also be prepared to serve as leaders in the School and to collaborate across the School and University with other department chairs and senior leaders.
