In 2011, Portland Parks and Recreation (PP&R) was honored with a gold medal and designated as the 'Best Park System in the United States' by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). An essential part of this gold medal parks system is a robust set of community recreation facilities and programs.
PP&R is building upon this award-winning system by seeking candidates for Recreation Supervisor for a range of facilities and programs. These facilities and programs are the heart of the Recreation Services Division, which includes community centers, sports, aquatics, specialized programs, arts, culture, and special events programs, along with enterprise programs such as golf and the Portland International Raceway.
The Recreation Supervisor provides leadership, operational oversight and relationship management in recreational, enrichment and leisure activities for city residents. These positions are responsible for the development and delivery of a wide assortment of programs to meet a broad range of interests for varied individuals and diverse communities. The Recreation Supervisor promotes workplace diversity and a positive employee relations environment supervising a diverse workforce and working environment. This position is responsible for the ongoing development and production of recreation and leisure programs and activities; fiscal budget development and management; safe and effective facility/park/asset operation; proactive communication, marketing and outreach to individuals, groups, organizations and partners. This position will require a person who has the ability to work in a multicultural environment, promoting community and individual health and lifestyles. Understanding the value of recreation as a means to achieve social equity among varied racial and ethnic communities within the Portland Community is paramount to the success of potential candidates.

After appointment to this classification, the employee may be placed in the premium pay assignment of Recreation Supervisor II, $5,673.00-$7,566.00. The assignment is made solely at the discretion of the Bureau Director. An employee may be removed from the assignment of Recreation Supervisor II without a statement of cause and shall have no appeal rights to the premium pay assignment. The employee will continue to accrue and maintain their status in the classification of Recreation Supervisor I, from the date of hire, even if they are removed from the premium pay assignment.

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
Knowledge and experience applying principles and practices of effective supervision to provide leadership to a diverse staff.
Knowledge and experience applying principles, procedures, standards, practices and trends in the field of recreation or comparable fields.
Knowledge and experience in developing, monitoring and managing fiscal budgets, including meeting expenditure and revenue targets.
Knowledge, ability and experience connecting with underrepresented communities, ensuring the development and delivery of culturally responsive programs and services. Responsibilities include: maintaining close contact with non-profit organizations; school officials; community groups; and others regarding programs and services.
