The University of California, Merced opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.
UC Merced Extension was established in July, 2015 and seeks to engage the Central Valley community in transformative scholarship and creativity while fostering a culture of inquiry and discovery learning by offering access to quality academic, professional and personal enrichment opportunities to meet the needs of continuing students, professionals and modern learners.
UC Merced Education Programs, part of University Extension, has been receiving requests to offer preparation/review courses on each of the Multiple Subjects CSET subtests. The CSET assesses content knowledge, as well as how to teach the content. The workshop materials have been developed to address the scope, sequence, and structure of each subtest as well as test-taking strategies.
Under the general direction of the UC Merced Extension Dean and Director of Education Programs, the CSET Workshop Instructors will facilitate a day-long workshop using the “Workshop Instructor Handbook” and the “Pre-Workshop Handbook” developed for each of the CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) subtests:
Subtest I: Reading, Language and Literature; History and Social Sciences
Subtest II: Science; Mathematics
Subtest III: Physical Education; Human Development; Visual and Performing Arts
Participants who register for the course will be provided with the “Pre-Workshop Handbook” to complete 4 self-directed hours prior to the workshop.
The workshops are intentionally planned a month apart, as we recommend taking only one subtest at a time. The following dates are scheduled for the Merced area:
Subtest II: Saturday, August 26, 2017
Subtest I: Saturday, September 23, 2017
Subtest III: Saturday, October 28, 2017
We intend to offer the workshops at the Fresno Center in a similar timeframe, but possibly over two evenings, rather than on Saturdays (due to security staffing). We will finalize dates for the Visalia area once a location has been determined.
The target audience are those individuals interested in teaching. A pre-service teacher must pass all three subtests prior to enrolling in their final term of their credential program, which includes final student teaching (or final independent teaching). As there are already online courses, UC Merced Extension’s CSET Workshops are intended to be experiential and rely on the “teachers-teaching-teachers” model, such that each day’s course is interactive and collaborative.
We are seeking Instructors, preferably willing to facilitate all three subtest workshops at a single location. These locations include the Merced area (TBD), Fresno area (at the UC Merced Fresno Center), and Visalia (TBD).
A minimum of three years' experience teaching K-12
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Experience facilitating workshops and/or professional development
Additional Salary Information: This is a by agreement contract position.
Compensation: $400 per workshop (potentially more, depending on enrollment).
