The Windham County Humane Society (WCHS), located on Route 30 in Brattleboro, Vermont, is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of animals as well as enhancing the relationship between individuals and pets through adoption, education, advocacy, compassion and promotion of animal welfare. Founded in 1887, WCHS helps both pets and domesticated animals through:
Sheltering of homeless, abused, neglected and owner-surrendered animals (1,000+/yr)
Pet Care assistance
Work with Law Enforcement on the investigation of reports of cruelty and neglect
WCHS is a growing non-profit organization with a current annual budget of approximately $515,000, 11 staff, and 70+ volunteers. Position Summary
The Veterinarian is responsible for providing quality care for shelter animals as well as for owned animals whose owners qualify for the WCHS Pet Care Assistance program.
Status: The position is hourly, non-exempt, at 6-12 hours/week. The hours are flexible. The position reports to the Executive Director.
Written performance evaluations will be given after the first three months and first twelve months of work and annually thereafter.
Duties, Responsibilities and Authority
Examine, treat and prescribe medications for shelter animals and animals enrolled in the Pet Care Assistance program (PCA)
Track and monitor animal health and well-being in Petpoint, the shelter database. Enter treatment plans, exam notes and prescriptions in Petpoint.
Work closely with WCHS animal care staff and shelter Vet of Record to oversee SOP’s and monitor implementation, making improvements as needed.
Provide excellent customer service to adopters and pet owners enrolled in the PCA program
Perform spay and neuter, mass removal and other surgeries as needed
Oversee anesthesia and dentals as performed by senior animal care staff
Work with CET’s to oversee euthanasia of public and shelter animals.
Qualifications and Skills
Education: Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine required
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years experience in a veterinary clinic or shelter setting
Current license to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Vermont
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of people and to remain calm in emotional situations.
Energetic and resourceful professional with the experience, skills and integrity necessary to foster excellence
Outgoing, optimistic, people person with exceptional interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of or willingness to learn state statutes in regards to animal welfare
