UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three UW campuses, UW Medicine hospitals and clinics, and research operations around the world. UW-IT partners with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service. UW-IT's responsibilities include: Working with academic, research, clinical, and administrative units to evaluate IT requirements, capabilities, and requests; Managing UW central IT infrastructure and services, including administrative systems and information management, networking, telecommunications, data centers, information security and privacy, academic and collaborative applications, computing infrastructure, IT services and strategic sourcing, accessible technology, customer service, and technology business continuity.
The Network Design and Architecture ("NDA") team provides network architecture, engineering, operations, and tier III network support. NDA's responsibilities span not only UW and UW Medicine, but also the state K-20 Education Network, the Pacific Northwest Gigapop, and other national and international research and education networks. It provides technology evaluation and solutions for voice and data networks (wired and wireless), service directions, architecture, design, and optical and Ethernet solutions for long-haul and local networks. This unit is structured to provide system design and support for all aspects of our research university environment.
UW-IT has an outstanding opportunity for a Network Engineer.
A Network Engineer is expected to be a network professional with experience in complex data and telecommunications systems design, development, management, and evaluation. Domain expertise ranges from Radio Frequency, WLAN, Layer 2/3, WLAN controller design, implementation, protocols and architecture.
Bachelor's degree in communication engineer, computer science, or related field or related experience.
Four years' experience in network engineering, implementation, or operations including the following:
Demonstrated disciplined troubleshooting methodology, paying close attention to detail
Experience maintaining detailed configuration and testing documentation
Design, deployment, and support of a large WLAN infrastructure
Experience testing wireless products including access points, controllers and other WLAN infrastructure and client devices for evaluation
Documentation, integration, customer support documentation, and service development.
Understanding of AAA and IP network security
Knowledge of 802.11 family and related protocols
Experience administering and operating wireless management systems
VLANs, DHCP, IP management and other necessary data network standards.
Excellent understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for WAN/LAN hardware to include routers, controllers, LAN switches, wireless access points, client devices, RF design, spectrum and protocol analysis.
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
Experience with ArubaOS software and associated Aruba WLAN infrastructure.
Experience working in a complex hospital or healthcare environment.
Experience with Voice over IP, Voice over WLAN, QoS and other related services.
Experience using and managing Airwave monitoring system.
Experience with ClearPass service policy and administration.
Experience with Ekahau Site Survey or similar product for predictive designs and site survey analysis.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
Must be able to respond to network outages, scheduled installations, and maintenance activities during off-hours while on active on-call duty.
Must be able to participate in walk-thru of construction sites for new buildings and major remodels.
Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds, climb a ladder, and run cable.
Must have a valid driver's license to operate State vehicles.
