Washington University School of Medicine seeks a creative, collaborative and detail-oriented individual to serve as a senior web graphic designer.
The selected individual will be primarily responsible for developing designs and user interfaces to achieve the school’s communications objectives. They will design consistent, reusable components that comprise a flexible system used to create a unified experience across a wide range of sites. This individual will refine and enhance the visual approach to the School of Medicine’s main website (medicine.wustl.edu) and the custom WordPress theme known as the WashU Web Theme (see sites.wustl.edu and webtheme.wustl.edu), which is the shared platform used by the school’s secondary sites. They will also assist with the creation of assets and visual branding for social media related to the School of Medicine and its physician practice.
The person in this position will report to the Director of Web Technical Strategy. The Director for Visual Brand will provide design direction and ensure unity of the work with the school and university brand. The web designer will work closely with content strategists, developers and other designers in Medical Public Affairs, our campus partners and our colleagues at the university’s Office of Public Affairs, bringing a collaborative spirit to all these interactions in pursuit of our shared interests.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Create an elegant, consistent system of design elements to be used in the WashU Web Theme and its associated plugins
Propose enhancements to the WashU Web Theme
Enhance the design of the School of Medicine’s main site
Design graphic assets (illustrations, infographics, icons, photo treatments, etc.) and layouts for strategically important sites, news releases, social media presences, videos, print pieces and email templates
Share knowledge and best practices with other members of the Medical Public Affairs team
Perform any other appropriate tasks as assigned by the Director of Web Technical Strategy
Bachelor's degree in graphic design or a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, or the equivalent in experience
A strong portfolio that demonstrates knowledge of graphic interface design and exceptional digital layout and design skills
At least three years of professional experience in web design; should include conceptualizing, designing and producing user-centered websites
Expertise with Photoshop, web standards and content management systems, especially WordPress
Conversant with HTML and CSS
Experience with responsive design
Success with meeting deadlines, multi-tasking and serving as design lead on digital projects of various sizes
Expertise in using an iterative, systems-based approach to design
Familiarity with web accessibility standards
Experience doing user testing of design options
Experience designing for social media
Health care or higher education experience
Attention to detail and accuracy in all phases of work
Ability to communicate well both in writing and orally with a variety of individuals, including faculty, administrators and other staff at the School of Medicine and university, as well as with all types of contractors associated with web production
Solid understanding of industry standards and best practices related to digital communications
Ability to provide design recommendations during the development of a creative brief
A commitment to following the brand guidelines of the university and the School of Medicine
