Research Programmer, Language Technologies Institute-2006158
The candidate will perform independent research, in collaboration with the research team, related to machine-learning based information extraction from the WWW and accessibility to the WWW for the blind. The candidate will also support research in related areas of data science and human computer interaction.
Our current project infrastructure consists of a system that analyzes pages, arriving at a browser, for poor 'structure'. A page with good structure is amenable for machine analysis, screen readers, etc. The system then on-the-fly rewrites the pages for better performance at these tasks. The system also includes a labeling interface for pages that extracts labels for a machine learning algorithm to improve pages. This interface allows a crowd of workers to label pages requested by clients.
Design, implement, and evaluate information extraction prototypes to run on a browser plug-in and cloud infrastructure.
Run laboratory studies of the effectiveness of UX and ML mixed initiative systems.
Provide management direction, support, feedback and guidance to students working on the team.
Collect and analyze data from these experiments and participate in submitting publications describing the methods, experiments and results.
As part of the position, the candidate will develop research experience in one or more of the main research areas of the project: machine learning for information extraction, mixed interaction, crowdsourcing, and accessibility.
Carnegie Mellon offers very generous tuition benefits. Prior lab members have utilized these benefits, and also participated in relevant research, to successfully pursue Masters programs with 100% tuition remission. In addition the lab has served as a stepping stone to PhD programs. You can get more information on tuition benefits at: http://www.cmu.edu/hr/benefits/benefit_programs/tuition/index.html
