This work is generally of a temporary nature and requires specialized experience or expertise.CONTRACT TITLENon-Teaching AdjunctFLSANon-exemptCAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATIONGuttman Community College at CUNY seeks creative, enthusiastic, and energetic doctoral students to work supporting the First Year Experience, Peer Mentoring program, and faculty as graduate coordinators.The centerpiece of the new college's educational model is an integrated first-year curriculum that builds the skills necessary for success in college-level work and presents a unique opportunity for the next generation of faculty to learn curricular best practices essential to the success of underprepared and first generation college students. Graduate students will have an opportunity to work alongside faculty, as well as work closely with peer mentors and undergraduates in the context of Studio, a weekly 90-minute mandatory collaborative study environment where students practice academic skills through reflective practice, synthesis, and integration. Graduate students will play an integral role in the academic support at GCC and participate in ongoing professional development with the GCC faculty.Studio and the Peer Mentoring Program are integral components of Guttman's administrative and academic structure. Graduate Coordinators will be responsible for oversight of 3 Studio sessions per week and work together with Academic Success Peer Mentors to insure that it is a productive and supportive environment. They will be expected to work collaboratively to help first-year students experience a positive transition to college and to assist in the creation of an inclusive, academically-focused community. Additionally, Graduate Coordinators will hold additional 1-1 academic support hours and participate in Instructional Team meetings.Reporting to the Associate Dean and working closely with the Lead Graduate Coordinator, and the City Seminar course coordinator, this position will be a primary resource for first-year students. Graduate Coordinators will serve as members of GCC Instructional Teams and will work closely with the other team members, including faculty members, Student Success Advocates, and a librarian.CommitmentThe position is a one-year opportunity. Graduate Coordinators will work between 15-20 hours per week and must commit to attending weekly instructional team meetings, Graduate Coordinator group meetings, peer mentor weekly planning meetings and to become familiar with the course curriculum, as well as attend and facilitate 3 Studio sections per week. A flexible schedule is required in order to meet the demands of the position. Some periods of time may require greater staffing demands, including individual tutoring meetings with students who are struggling academically as well as attendance at ongoing professional development sessions. A mandatory development session that will take place the week of August 14th is required of all hires. Graduate Coordinators will also participate in the GCC Summer Bridge Program, which begins Monday, August 21, 2017 and ends on Friday, September 1st, 2017.The primary responsibilities of the position are: * To assist instructional programs by supporting the academic success environment of Studio. Studio is a place for students to practice the skills and habits of mind essential to engaging in successful academic study. Studio provides students with opportunities to integrate the skills and knowledge they are developing in other course components. In particular, Studio activities support the work students do on integrated assignments. * To provide students with assistance in areas such as study skills, time management, organization, test-taking skills, collaboration strategies, syllabus comprehension, general academic competencies, and using online resources (e.g., CUNYFirst, Digication, etc.) effectively. * To develop mentoring relationships with first-year students and the peer mentors. * To support first-year students in statistics, reading, writing and the development of critical thinking abilities through Studio and individual tutoring. * Assist in ongoing assessment of Studio through the use of e-portfolios and other data collection activities.Additional responsibilities include: * To support the continued development of teaching and learning practices at the GCC through ongoing professional development. * To inform the instructional teams of individual student progress, instructional effectiveness and peer mentoring support. The teams will develop and/or adapt integrative curricula and assignments, plan classroom and out-of-class activities, mediate conflicts that may arise among students, and generate ideas for improving the learning community experience for GCC students, faculty, and staff, among other tasks.Practically, every week a Graduate Coordinator will: * Facilitate 3 studios (1.5 hours each) * Attend the Graduate Coordinator general meeting (1.5 hours) * Attend the House Instructional team meeting (1.5 hours) * Facilitate a planning meeting with a peer mentor for each upcoming studio (3 hours) * Hold office hours for students (2-3 hours) * Plan for Studios and provide feedback to students on their work (3 hours)MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's Degree required.OTHER QUALIFICATIONSGraduate Coordinators must be committed to the mission, values, and objectives of GCC. They should have experience supporting the academic development of a diverse population of students, experience working with college staff and faculty members, and they should possess strong pedagogical skills as well as a willingness to learn new techniques and approaches to student support.
