Summary: The Disability Services and Academic Support Specialist reports to the Learning Assistance Center and Disability Services (LAC-DS) and assists with the coordination and implementation of disability accommodations and learning assistance services serving as liaison among all University campuses and programs, including programs of the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education (BGCME), Reynolda Campus, and Wake Downtown.
Manages the interactive process; conducts and processes intakes for disability accommodation requests (i.e. requests for auxiliary services and academic adjustments, for applicants, admitted applicants, and students) of the School of Medicine (MD, PA, CRNA), the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Reynolda Campus Wake Downtown programs.
Reviews disability documentation and determines eligibility for disability services, in compliance with state, federal, and institutional regulations.
Conducts, processes, and coordinates academic support intakes for students of the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Reynolda Campus Wake Downtown.
Serves as liaison between campuses and programs to coordinate auxiliary services, academic adjustments, and other accommodations for admitted applicants or students.
Serves as liaison between campuses and programs to coordinate learning assistance and other academic support services.
Participates in outreach programming and provides seminars, workshops, guest lectures, and training programs to campus constituencies.
Coordinates alternative formatting of instructional materials.
Coordinates testing processes, scheduling, and coordinating all accommodated testing appointments; serves as lead proctor on exams, if needed; employs accurate accommodations and accommodated testing practices including testing room conditions consistent with students' accommodation plans, timing devices accurately configured, and staging of assistive technology devices/programs required for testing.
Ensures that admitted applicants and students are provided current information regarding internal and external disability and learning assistance services and resources available to them.
Maintains records and statistics on disability services including maintenance of verification records and correspondence of students requesting or receiving academic accommodations. Interacts with students, parents, and faculty in the resolution of conflicts regarding accommodations.
Coordinates alternative text and assistive technology programs.
Works collaboratively with faculty and professional staff across campuses regarding needs related to electronic and information technology.
Assists in researching, assessing needs, providing disability management counseling, and collaborating in the development of and administration of programs which assist in meeting obligation to students with disabilities as required by applicable Federal and State laws and University policy.
Assists with training and education to students, faculty, staff, prospective students, and parents on issues of sensitivity and inclusion for people with disabilities and services provided.
Documents, maintains and reviews case records, notes, interactive process efforts and related information while maintaining confidentiality.
Supports the disability grievance process.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Master’s degree in Education, Counseling or equivalent discipline and a minimum two years of relevant work experience.
Proven ability to evaluate and interpret disability documentation and implement reasonable accommodations.
Knowledge of learning, physical, psychological, and medical disabilities and accommodations.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively to groups; ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
Ability to assess information regarding persons of concern.
Ability to professionally and appropriately manage sensitive and private information.
Ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information.
Understanding of and ability to adhere to strict privacy restrictions.
Knowledge of applicable laws that ensure equal access to students, including Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and ADAAA (2008), as well as knowledge of accessible technology best practices such as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.
Advanced degree in Social Work, Education, Medical, Counseling or equivalent discipline.
Experience working in higher education settings.
Knowledge of medical and health sciences education.
Knowledge of student learning and operational assessment processes and procedures.
Familiarity with electronic calendar and record keeping.
Experience working with diverse young adults.
Understanding and experience working with accessible technology.
