The Director of Development’s primary focus is to create and implement strategies to enhance the overall financial resources of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El (NSSBE). To accomplish this, the Director must build relationships with all possible constituencies, including members, board members, staff, donor and membership prospects, corporate sponsors, foundations and community representatives.
The Director of Development’s goals focus around the following priority areas:
Maintain existing donor relationships and deepen those relationships through regular, relevant communications and stewardship with the ultimate goal of increasing total funds raised
Refine and implement a plan to increase and expand major individual and foundation donor prospects and a pipeline of smaller and mid-level donors.
Develop clear expectations, processes, systems, metrics and performance measures to guide development goals and efforts.
This is a full time senior level position. Flex hours are negotiable.
The Director of Development (DOD) will lead the development effort by building a complete fundraising program and strengthening the philanthropic profile of NSSBE.
Reporting to Executive Director, the DOD will collaborate regularly with NSSBE’s clergy, lay leadership, and senior staff for support, coordination and marketing needed to grow the development program. This includes strategizing and planning to determine the most appropriate donor cultivation opportunities, prospects, and priorities for activities and events.
The DOD will be a professional with the ability to establish development strategy, including annual giving, planned giving, grants, High Holy Day appeal, events, online giving and donor stewardship.
The DOD will be a professional with the ability to work collaboratively with the clergy, senior staff and lay leadership to assist with the solicitation of donations, either directly or supporting others.
Duties and responsibilities:
Working with the appropriate board committees, including NSSBE’s Endowment Corporation, prepare and implement a comprehensive, integrated development program with short term and long term deliverables.
Develop, promote, coordinate, and manage all fundraising activities, including donor stewardship and annual fund raising goals and objectives.
Participate in the development and implementation of lay leadership fundraising training.
Report regularly on the status of all fundraising programs, and maintain an accessible fundraising calendar.
Oversee the organization and maintenance of a donor database and all development records.
Prepare and administer a Development budget in conjunction with appropriate Synagogue leadership.
Interface with other related non-profit entities when appropriate, most especially the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago as well as others.
College degree required; post-graduate work a plus and a minimum of 5 years fundraising and development operations experience.
Successful track record of cultivating and soliciting major gifts and building a successful development program.
A history of meeting and exceeding budgeted goal.
Experience working with and training volunteers.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database management / fundraising systems.
Knowledge of, and experience with, effective fundraising strategies.
