You will lead, manage and coordinate career and outplacement counseling for associates and counsel within the Americas region.
You will work closely with Firm Leadership, Regional Section Heads, and the People Advisory team to initiate and facilitate career development conversations with associates and counsel, as well as prepare and recommend associates for continued professional growth within the Firm or in positions outside the Firm.
Equally, you will be an advocate for the associates and counsel in the region ensuring they receive the training, experiences and coaching they need for progression and continued success in the Firm. You will understand the value of our client relationships and work to further our Firm’s business model and overall productivity and profitability.
The primary responsibilities of this role are:
Identifying job opportunities with clients, the government, boutique firms, and others to create a database accessible by the professional development team and/or coach.
Meeting with associates and counsel outside the performance review process to help set goals and develop a career path, which may not necessarily include promotion to partnership.
Initiating and facilitating career goal discussions as part of the performance review process, likely as a separate meeting, and/or within preexisting mentoring relationships.
Leadership of the Career Counseling function
Help shape and drive implementation of the People agenda supporting the section business plan and global Firm vision.
Understand and apply the Firm’s career framework to associate pipeline planning, succession planning, high performance culture, etc.
Meet individually with associates across the region to set and manage to career goals, update resumes and interview skills, and navigate internal relationships.
Follow up and work with associates on development recommendations in performance evaluations and at the recommendation of partners outside the performance review cycle.
Through regular, ongoing coaching, counseling, and training, prepare associates for promotion to partnership, in-house roles, or positions with the government.
Assist associates with identifying internal and external development and training opportunities.
Collaborate with the Learning & Development team to create and implement a regional training program to develop key skills sets for attorney interested in joining a client.
Through relationships with partners, Business Services Leaders, alumni, and other relevant stakeholders, create a deep and broad database of job openings with clients, the government, and other entities that is searchable and available to associates who are interested in positions outside the Firm. Meet regularly with partners and members of the People Advisory team to identify associates who may be interested in these outside career opportunities.
Coach and counsel associates regarding job bank listings, refer them to appropriate positions, and assist with applications, interviews, and follow-up.
Cultivate, negotiate, and manage relationships with core group of recruiters/staffing agencies who will work exclusively with White & Case associates on outplacement.
Develop and manage supporting budgets for all related costs and programs.
Broaden Networks and Deepen Client Relationships
Develop and host BD/networking/Alumni programs so young lawyers can efficiently build professional networks and develop client relationships.
Collaborate with Business Development/Marketing and the Alumni team to broaden and deepen the Firm’s alumni network for the benefit of White & Case associates and counsel.
Work closely and communicate regularly with partners regarding the Alumni program and connections to the outplacement programs/efforts.
Develop and present professional development sessions at alumni panels, town halls, and during the Summer Associate Programs.
Collaborate with the People Advisory Managers to staff associates on Client Teams, which could lead to additional networking, secondment, and business development opportunities.
In conjunction with the relevant Business Development teams, continue to leverage our current secondment program.
Work closely with partners to determine career pathing requirements and monitor headcount and utilization.

In collaboration with the broader People Advisory team, provide input into headcount management development and action plans.
Participate on global/regional/office project teams as requested by leadership.
Participate in meetings related to the activities of the People department or related projects, when requested.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by reviewing and contributing to related professional publications.
Maintain the practice of continuous improvement and education by attending seminars, etc., and keeping current on new leadership skills.

Uphold firm, departmental and team rules and procedures.

Education and Qualifications
JD strongly preferred.
Five to seven years as an attorney in a large law firm or professional services setting, or other relevant experience.
Certified professional coach.
Location and Reporting
This role could be located anywhere in the Americas region, with a preference for New York
Ability to travel regularly (at least 60% of the time) throughout the region, spending time in each office meeting with partners and associates
