Academic Advisors are responsible for assisting students in the development of educational, career and transfer plans through the assimilation of information from a variety of sources; course selection; interpretation of academic rules, regulations, policies and procedures; and intervention and referral to appropriate services and resources. Academic advisors are expected to stay current with advising models and to employ a variety of strategies as they work to assist students in accomplishing their goals. Academic advisors are assigned a student caseload and must regularly communicate with targeted student groups and act as a liaison to AACC departments. The advisor in this position will participate in collaborative efforts related to other engagement and high impact practices on campus designed to increase retention and guided pathways to completion of all students. The advisor will participate in success strategies designed to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity, and sustained academic achievement. The expectation for this position is for the advisor to support student academic and career momentum as they progress toward meaningful careers and postsecondary credentials. This advisor will be responsible for establishing an online advising system and will communicate with students primarily in a virtual environment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities: Assist students at all AACC locations in all phases of academic advising and career planning, and in the skills needed to develop an educational plan, leading to a guided pathway to completion.
Provide detailed information to students concerning program requirements, transfer requirements, curriculum choice, course selection, registration procedures, AACC policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Ensure that degree/certificate seeking developmental students begin all required developmental course sequences and continue in that sequence to facilitate readiness for credit coursework and timely goal completion.
Meet with students experiencing academic challenges to help acquaint them with available college support services and resources, draft student success contracts, and make referrals as needed.
Update each student’s educational plan screen at the conclusion of each session and make appropriate advising notes.
Assist students with petitions requesting exceptions to college policy.
Use technology to view, sort, and monitor student caseloads, communicate and foster professional relationships with students, evaluate student records for program completion, and to teach students about online services through MyAACC.
Contribute to weekly, monthly and annual reports, attend staff meetings and training sessions, work in concert and cooperation with other college departments, and serve on appropriate committees.
Collaborate with colleagues in engagement and high impact practices such as new student orientation, student success course, supplemental instruction, and tutoring to name a few.
Assist the Dean, Director and Assistant Directors with identifying strategies to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity of outcomes.
Assist/accompany counselors responding to crisis situations, as requested.
Immediately report concerns about students to the Director.
Other duties as assigned by the Dean, Director and/or Assistant Directors.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, education or a related field is required.
Minimum of three years of experience in academic advising in a post-secondary academic setting required.
Experience with online/virtual advising.
Working knowledge of student development theories and their applicability to student success strategies and co-curricular programming is required.
Knowledge of current student engagement and high impact practices designed for community colleges.
Ability to work at all AACC locations during regular operating hours which include one evening per week and occasional Saturdays.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all student groups, faculty, administrators, professional and support staff, and the public.
Experience working in a culturally diverse setting.
Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and ability to master student information systems.
