Responsibilities include design, development, testing, support and technical leadership for the portions of the electronic Research Administration (eRA) system at the University of Iowa. This position will lead the Subaward Review project which encompasses the business logic, user interfaces, and processes surrounding the Subaward review process for the campus. The successful candidate must show excellent judgment as the position requires the candidate to work with autonomy to deliver the subsystem to campus based on collaboration with team members, multiple campus business units, and stakeholders. Design, development, testing, support and technical leadership will continue to other modules within the eRA system which is a rapidly evolving system responding to federal, local, and institutional regulatory requirements. This position will be required to provide support on a rotating basis during extended business hours.
Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related field, and a minimum of five years progressive experience in application development and support; or an equivalent combinatoin of education and related experience (e.g., Masters Degree in Computer Science or related field, and a minimum of two years progressive experience in application development and support).
Extensive experience creating and maintaining dynamic web applications with Ruby on Rails, Java, or PHP.
Demonstrated proficiency with Ruby on Rails core libraries, design patterns, refactoring, unit testing, and knowledge of differences between Rails versions.
Proven track record of delivering successful enterprise-scale web applications through the full development lifecycle with minimal technical direction.
Excellent technical judgment, providing simple solutions to complex problems.
Extensive experience with Agile Development Practices
Extensive relational database experience, including experience writing SQL queries, creating SQL based reports, tuning SQL statements, and troubleshooting complex SQL.
Working knowledge of web application accessibility including testing methodologies used.
Extensive experience with software development best practices including source code control, issue tracking, prototyping, and automated testing.
Exposure to a team oriented collaborative work environment with a demonstrated ability to work well with others across team boundaries and technical skillsets. Provides leadership to other developers and works with senior management to translate general requirements into functional specifications.
Extensive experience with development tools, including RubyMine, PivotalTracker, and Jenkins
Understanding of security issues and defensive programming techniques.
Extensive experience with software and database modeling.
Working familiarity with Research Administration and associated administrative processes.
Working experience with object oriented analysis, design and programming.
Excellent written and verbal communication, and customer relations, skills.
