The Knox-Galesburg Symphony announces that applications and nominations are currently being accepted for the position of Conductor and Music Director. The person selected will assume responsibilities for the position beginning with the 2019-2020 season, the organization’s 68th year.
Founded in 1951 as a volunteer community orchestra and developed into its current structure as a hybrid ensemble comprising both professional and community musicians, the Knox-Galesburg Symphony (KGS) is located in Galesburg, Illinois, and serves as the primary orchestra for the residents of Galesburg and surrounding communities. The orchestra’s season currently consists of four subscription concerts, as well as an outdoor summer performance, a pops concert, a holiday concert, various chamber performances, and education programs. The KGS is a four-time recipient of the Illinois Council of Orchestras “Orchestra of the Year” award. Our primary performance venue is the historic Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg.
The Knox-Galesburg Symphony is governed by the Galesburg Symphony Society, a 16-member Board of Directors, and is supported by a professional administrative staff.
Located in the heart of west-central Illinois, Galesburg is known for its rich history and beautiful, historic homes - the perfect backdrop for thriving boutiques, vibrant arts and culture, and an affordable lifestyle. Located 200 miles southwest of Chicago, Galesburg is easily accessible by Amtrak (direct connection between Chicago and Galesburg), Quad Cities International Airport (40 miles) and Peoria International Airport (35 miles).
We are seeking a Music Director with the highest artistic aspirations and substantial professional experience. The Music Director reports directly to the KGS Board of Directors and is responsible for the fulfillment of the orchestra’s artistic programs, cultivation of our respected orchestra, and impact in the community. S/he is responsible for the repertoire, programming and artistic production, and has authority for the selection, development, and (if necessary) replacement of musicians in the ensemble. As a community arts leader and advocate, the Music Director will actively contribute to the orchestra’s regional outreach, educational, and fundraising activities. In addition, the Music Director is expected to work closely and effectively with the KGS Executive Director, Board of Directors, staff, and related KGS organizations in carrying out these responsibilities.

Master's or Doctoral degree in Conducting with professional experience as a Music Director. (Candidates with a bachelor's degree may be considered with demonstration of significant professional orchestral conducting experience.)
Outstanding musicianship with knowledge of a broad range of repertoire.
An effective and efficient rehearsal technique that balances attention to technical details with effective communication of overall interpretive goals.
Strong interpersonal, leadership, administrative, and communications skills.
Experience with community engagement, audience development, and fundraising.
Demonstrated abilities to sustain and grow an orchestra.
Awareness of the evolving role of an orchestra in a changing society.
Basic knowledge of the orchestra association as a nonprofit organization, with an understanding and appreciation of the roles of the Board, the staff, the musicians, and the volunteers.
Ability to cultivate existing and new audiences and patrons.
A podium demeanor that fosters a respectful, collegial, yet serious atmosphere, enhancing the quality of music and supporting the musicians’ physical and emotional well-being.
Artistic and Administrative Responsibilities
Plan the concert season, including, but not limited to regular or subscription concerts, educational performances, chamber concerts/recitals, special concerts.
Select repertoire in collaboration with the Executive Director and Artistic Advisory Committee.
Maintain awareness of currently performing solo artists, contemporary repertoire, and performance/rehearsal practices.
Cultivate an inclusive and collaborative environment with willingness to incorporate the ideas and input of others throughout the organization and other arts organizations in our region.
Exercise fairness and objectivity in making recommendations to the orchestra’s management concerning personnel decisions within the orchestra.
Conceive, plan, and implement pops programs that are inventive and engage both orchestra and audience.
Actively engage in solicitation of potential subscribers, patrons, and major donors and play an active role in KGS fundraising events.
Work with the Board to develop current and future budget strategies for the orchestra.

Candidate screening and interviews will take place from September to December 2017.
Finalists will be contacted in February 2018 to discuss programming.
Finalists will conduct season rehearsals and concerts during the 2018-2019 Season.
Position offer will be extended to successful candidate at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 Season.
