Student Fiscal Services has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist. The mission of Student Fiscal Services (SFS) is to achieve exceptional quality in the fiscal administration of student financial aid program and University receivables; and the provision of University cash management services. Key processes include billing and collecting tuition and fees, disbursing and reconciling financial aid, coordinating the loan origination process, coordinating the collection of receivables (loans, aid, and invoices), providing financial information to students and parents, educating students on personal finances, and supporting staff development.
The mission of Computing is to enhance productivity and empower SFS staff by making information and technology accessible. The unit provides hardware and software support, development of new applications, is the liaison with UW Computing and Communications and provides accurate and complex information to our process partners in Financial Management and at the UW, to SFS staff, UW advisers and departmental staff, and to students and parents.
Design, develop, test, and update new and existing database applications used in the department; Analyze, evaluate, and implement new and existing technologies in support of organizational needs including automation of operations and processes; Provide training to new staff about the systems, software, hardware in use in the department; Assist in developing support documentation for new and existing computerized applications; Collaborate with departmental staff to understand and document operational and business processes, Define requirements, and propose technical solutions to integrate and improve existing workflows; Provide assistance to all users of departmental desktop computing resources.
This position is complex and demanding, as it manages a vast range of activities and processes that have wide reaching impact for the University. It requires being able to make complex decisions that impact systems, staff, students, parents and process partners.
Typical responsibilities and duties
Systems and Applications Development & Maintenance
Analyze existing systems & work flow processes
Participate in systems priority planning for Student Fiscal Services offices
Design, develop, test and modify applications, containing custom menus, queries, input forms, and reports, using programming languages
Maintain and modify existing database applications
Write SQL Queries to download data from various UW administrative mainframe systems and data warehouses
Import extracted data into spreadsheet and/or database applications for customized report generation and automation of manual processes
Develop documentation and train departmental staff on use of applications
Coordinate with Information System programmers to interface departmental applications with mainframe systems
Software and Hardware Support, Training & Maintenance
Support data exchange (upload/download)
Supervise installation of updated versions of software.
Troubleshoot problems with software and connectivity.
Provide access sign-on and training to Student Loans & Receivables staff.
Operating system, application software training and support
Design and provide training to departmental staff on operating system and software applications used in departments such as Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
Provide ongoing technical support and expertise to staff on various software applications to keep their skills current and teach them to use advanced features
Install or supervise installation of software on stand-alone computers (credit bureau, database applications, etc.)
Develop and maintain user and technical documentation training materials and manuals for applications used throughout the departments
Troubleshoot and repair problems.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field
Five years of experience in advanced systems analysis and development using one or more of the following: Visual Basic, Visual Basic.net, C#, WPF, Windows Forms, SQL Server, Crystal Reports, Reporting Services. Demonstrated customer service skills and the ability to work with personnel of various levels of technical background
Participate as leader, facilitator and/or team member in process improvement teams
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to prioritize workload, problem solve, meet deadlines, adapt to change, learn existing complex systems, and utilize new technology
Demonstrated experience in working independently and as a member of a team
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
