: We are seeking a R&D S&E, Optical Engineer to participate in the operation, enhancement, and application of the Z\-Petawatt \(ZPW\) laser system\. The ZPW laser is one of the largest and most powerful pulsed solid\-state lasers in the world with the capability for multi\-kilojoule and multi\-petawatt operation\. ZPW is part of the Z\-Beamlet laser facility, a state\-of\-the\-art laser facility that is operated in conjunction with the Z Machine z\-pinch facility at Sandia \(the world's most powerful x\-ray source\) to enable scientists to study fundamental issues of high\-energy\-density physics in support of the Department of Energy Stockpile Stewardship Program\. Additional opportunities will exist to actively participate in research aimed at developing new applications and uses of the ZPW and Z\-Beamlet laser systems\. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan, conceive, conduct, or manage research and development for Sandia's customers and sponsors\.+ Direct systematic study toward a fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts, and discovers new approaches to achieve goals\.+ Create new understandings and capabilities by using the scientific method's hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods\.+ Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research\. Required: + Bachelor's and master's degree in optical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical field plus two or more years relevant experience; or bachelor's and doctorate in optical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical field\.+ Experience designing, building, and using high\-power subpicosecond\-class chirped\-pulse\-amplification \(CPA\) laser systems to perform high\-energy\-density science experiments\. Desired: + Strong background in laser and optical design, solid\-state optics, optical physics, and optical detectors and laser diagnostics\.+ Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and presentations\.+ Experience in the design, construction, and use of x\-ray and particle beam diagnostics\.+ Experience working in clean room laboratory environments\.+ Adaptive optics system design and use\.+ ZEMAX or other optical design software experience\.+ Thin film optical coatings experience\.+ Mechanical design with SolidWorks or equivalent\.+ Vacuum system assembly and operation\. Department Description: The department is responsible for developing and applying laser\-produced x\-ray sources and detectors to support high\-energy\-density science experiments performed on Sandia's Z pulsed\-power facility\. The department is composed of a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technologists that work together in a collaborative environment to support scientists from around the world that work on Z to pursue research in the areas of inertial confinement fusion, condensed matter physics, atomic physics, shock physics, radiation transport, and planetary science\.
