The Mustang Club provides annual operational support for SMU Athletics. Mustang Club donations provide SMU Athletics with the tools to support SMU’s talented student-athletes, who compete in 17 Division I sports programs, to be nationally competitive in their academic and athletic endeavors. Gifts to the Mustang Club provide everything from the education and academic support of SMU’s student-athletes, to providing their athletic equipment, health care, and life skills training, all of which are part of their world-class education at SMU.
About the Position:
Reporting directly to the Associate Athletics Director for Development, the Director of the Mustang Club oversees the solicitation and stewardship of donors to all operational giving funds in athletics, including the Mustang Club and sport-specific Excellence Funds.
The Director works closely with the Associate AD, Development to maximize annual operations support for the Department of Athletics, leveraging premium seating opportunities in Ford Stadium and Moody Coliseum.
The Director will carry a portfolio of approximately 100 donors and prospects and will have personal fundraising goals in addition to managing the team's operational fundraising goals. In addition to working with other Development and External Affairs colleagues, the Director also works in close collaboration with members of the Mustang Club Board to grow the donor base by identifying and soliciting new donors.
Management and Oversight of Operational Giving activity: Responsibility for day-to-day management of operational giving activity, including Mustang Club and Excellence Funds, with strategic input from the Associate Athletic Director, Development. Management oversight includes design of marketing materials (Mustang Club donor guide), annual solicitations, communications to donors, marketing collaboration with the Ticket Office to design and distribute invoices and donation reminders, development of event strategy and execution in collaboration with Operations Manager, calculation of priority points, management of TicketMaster relationship, the Mustang Club Board of Directors, the Wranglers and being the Athletics liaison for the University-wide "day of giving".
Prospect Management: responsible for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activity of a portfolio of prospects (100) for athletics gifts. Work closely with Assoc. Athletic Director, Development to set, and achieve, yearly goals and metrics.
A minimum of three years of professional work experience in fundraising or development is required.
Experience managing a professional staff is also required.
Experience in collegiate athletics fundraising is desirable.
A proven track record of fundraising success is essential.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The ideal candidate must possess strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with external (donors, prospects, trustees) and internal (leadership, faculty, staff, colleagues) constituents. The ability to communicate effectively in writing is required. A strong customer service orientation is essential.
The successful candidate must be a motivated self-starter, skilled as a member of working with and on multiple teams; a consensus builder with success working in complex organizations; a proven administrator who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and produces high-quality work; and a seasoned professional with excellent work ethic, diplomacy and maturity. The ability to multi-task and consistently meet deadlines is essential.
Candidate must demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems as well as devise solutions. Strong project management skills are essential.
Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). Experience with CRM database (Blackbaud Enterprise, etc) is preferred.
