Ladder Up is an entrepreneurial non-profit organization dedicated to helping hardworking families and individuals access the financial resources and opportunities they need to move up the economic ladder.
With the help of 1,000+ volunteers, Ladder Up serves more than 16,000 clients annually through free tax return preparation, college financial aid application assistance, and financial education programs.
This past year, Ladder Up generated a total economic impact of more than $22 million in low-income Chicagoland communities by:
Preparing 11,020 tax returns to secure more than $17.3 million in refunds for hardworking families and individuals;
Providing FAFSA completion assistance to 381 students, helping them access an estimated $4.8 million in financial aid awards for college;
Informing more than 2,600 students and parents about financial aid opportunities and college finances through “FAFSA 101” and “College Knowledge” workshops;
Working with 168 one-on-one financial coaching clients to provide individualized financial assistance;
Educating over 2,500 individuals on financial topics; and
Helping tax clients access more than 480 asset-building services at tax time.
As a seasonal independent contractor within the LIFT program, you will be trained to help Ladder Up deliver financial aid and financial education services at schools and organizations across Chicago. You will receive extensive training on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and topics related to college financing in order to prepare you to lead informational workshops and FAFSA completion sessions. You will also receive training on financial topics to prepare you to lead financial literacy workshops.
You may be asked to assist with administrative duties in our downtown office, including, but not limited to, data entry, partner correspondence, and special projects.
This position requires leadership, public speaking, and interpersonal communications skills.
Qualified candidates can elect to be trained as a Money Coach for Ladder Up’s Save Up program, through which clients of the organization’s Tax Assistance Program can access asset-building services at tax time. As a Money Coach, you will help tax clients:
Open free prepaid cards on which to receive their tax refunds;
Open myRA retirement accounts (to which they can direct portions of their tax refunds);
Purchase U.S. savings bonds with part of their tax refunds; and
Access their free annual credit reports.
Money Coaches are active from late January through mid-April.
Seasonal LIFT Specialist Qualifications
Strong presentation skills
Quick learner who can work well independently
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and flexible in a dynamic environment
Experience working with low-income populations
Ability to communicate respectfully with diverse populations
Access to a car required
Proficiency in Google and Microsoft Office applications, especially PowerPoint
Willingness to use smartphone apps and an online scheduling system
Schedule flexibility and willingness to work nights and weekends
Willingness to travel up to 90% of the time
Special consideration given to candidates who:
Have a background in financial aid and/or financial literacy
Have Spanish language skills
