General Statement of Duties:
The Dean of Students provides strategic oversight and leadership in all areas related to Student Affairs and facilitates a campus environment conducive to the well-being, engagement, and safety of Framingham State University students. This work requires regular collaboration with staff and faculty in other offices, especially in connection to threat assessment and Title IX. The Dean of Students also administers academic policies as approved by University governance and detailed in the University catalog.
Supervision Received: This position reports directly to the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Development.
Supervision Exercised: Staff in the Dean of Students office; Associate Dean of Students; Assistant Dean for Campus Engagement; Director of Residence Life; Director of Career Services and Employer Relations; Director of Counseling Center; Director of Health Center; and Director of Orientation and First-Year Programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the direction and overall assessment of the units in Student Affairs directed by direct reports and their areas of supervision.
Works in collaboration with the Dean of Enrollment Management to facilitate the transition, retention, and engagement of students from point of orientation through graduation.
Collaborates with University Police to facilitate student safety, including serving as chair of the University's Threat Assessment Team.
Works with the Director of Academic Support concerning students in the confidential registry for students with disabilities.
Administers the following academic policies:
Collaborates with faculty members, academic deans, and the University Registrar in addressing student concerns related to academic policies and the identification of solutions.
Works with the University Registrar to send notifications of important academic deadlines, including deadlines for add/drop, course withdrawals (reviews student requests for exceptions).
Administers the University's academic honesty policy, including tracking of student violations, and the formal University grade appeal policy.
Serves as the Title IX Coordinator for Students:
Ensures Title IX cases involving students are documented and forwarded to the Director of Equal Opportunity, Title IX Coordinator, and ADA Compliance.
Investigates Title IX cases involving students, as needed.
Serves as an appeal officer, back-up reviewer, and back-up mediator.
Maintains understanding and knowledge of current Title IX regulations and attends trainings on Title IX to remain current on regulations.
Facilitates the resolution of student complaints under the University's Equal Opportunity Plan by serving as the primary appeal officer, and as a back-up contact person, or back-up mediator as needed.
Responsible for collecting and reviewing end of year reports from all areas in Student Affairs before submission to Vice President of Enrollment and Student Development.
Collaborates with the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Development to develop a strategic plan for Student Affairs that supports the University's strategic plan and responsible for assessing progress with initiatives in connection to the plan.
Responsible for office budget and budget review of all areas in Student Affairs.
Responsible for Student Affairs emergency planning.
Collaborates with the University Registrar concerning student veterans.
Serves on governance committees.
Represents area in meetings with Board of Trustees members.
Accountable for ensuring that affirmative action, equal opportunity, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decision in areas of responsibility.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree required; degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or closely related field preferred. Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred.
Ten years of progressive experience in higher education with a minimum of five years of supervisory experience in Student Affairs or related field.
Record of effective leadership in Student Affairs.
Demonstrated knowledge of Title IX and investigative procedures.
Demonstrated knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice.
Demonstrated ability to think strategically and manage multiple complex tasks.
Experience managing sensitive and confidential matters.
Ability to foster a collaborative and collegial environment through effective professional development and team building.
Evidence of ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of constituents, including but not limited to students, parents, executive staff, and Board of Trustees members.
Understanding of the importance of the relationship between the academic life and the co-curricular life in student success.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Facility with a range of software tools such as the Microsoft suite and student information systems (like Banner, Datatel, Peoplesoft, etc).
Demonstrated knowledge of, or experience providing, access and support services for students with disabilities
