The University is seeking applicants for a full-time Lab Safety Assistant/Program Assistant, Administrative Services position. This position will report directly to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the college's labs and studio spaces. This includes developing safety protocols for procedures, materials, and instrumentation; providing periodic safety training for faculty, staff, and students; overseeing disposal of chemical and hazardous waste; and coordinating with the college's technical staff, as well as Facilities. The primary function of this position is to provide leadership and expertise in the development, administration, and maintenance of programs for laboratory safety, with emphasis in chemical safety. This position will develop, implement, and manage policies, procedures, and programs that promote a safe, responsible, healthful, and compliant work environment for all faculty, staff, and students. This position will provide service, technical support and compliance guidance to the University and may serve as the EHS representative to several lab safety committees that include the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, and Lab Safety Committee.
Serves as the college's point person for lab safety and as the Chemical Hygiene Officer
Keeps the Chemical Hygiene Plan updated and accessible to all
Coordinates with research and teaching faculty, along with staff, to develop and administer safety and chemical hygiene protocols for all labs and studio spaces
Conducts periodic training for faculty, staff, and students regarding safety practices
Conduct periodic routine inspections of laboratories and studios to ensure that they comply with regulations
Ensures that safety materials are available and protocols followed
Forms and leads a lab safety committee of faculty, staff and EHS personnel to assess policies and procedures and to develop a good safety culture
Ensure that hazardous chemicals are disposed of properly
Works with Facilities and departmental staff and managers to develop protocols for material handling and waste removal.
Works with Facilities to ensure that work areas are in compliance with OSHA regulations
Assists in documenting processes, usage, and requirements for accreditation reports and funding agency surveys
Oversees compliance with Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS)
Training Programs for Research Safety with regard to chemical issues
Hazard Assessment Signage Program (HASP)
Inspections of Fume Hood, Emergency Showers and Eyewashes
Supports technical resolution for facility renovation and projects related to lab working areas, including design review
Conducts semi-annual hood certifications
Conducts annual chemical inventory updates
Other duties as assigned
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Lab Science, Chemistry, Biology, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or other related field.
Previous experience in a lab setting dealing with safety, materials handling and compliance issues to include lab safety supervision.
Knowledge of chemical and safety protocols.
Ability to work in a self-directed manner, involving multiple stakeholders, and develop and implement processes.
Excellent communication and management skills.
Experience in laboratory safety and hazardous materials response.
Certification in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, or closely related field desired.
EHS Audit experience.
Ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of customers to include undergraduate students, faculty, and University-level committees.
Demonstrated program development experience and ability to anticipate concerns before they become obstacles. Vision of multiple intertwined processes from cradle-to-grave.
Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Suite products, at a minimum, Word, Excel and Power Point.
Familiarity with School Dude, Banner and Blackboard systems.
EHS knowledge in the laboratory and research setting.
