Job Description *Manager, Princeton Biophysics Core Facility, Departments of Chemistry and Molecular Biology *Analytical Spectroscopist, Mass Spectrometry and Small Instrument Core Facilities, Department of Chemistry The Departments of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, Princeton University, seek an associate professional specialist or more senior for the analytical core facilities - the newly-created Princeton Biophysics Core Facility (50%) and the Department of Chemistry's Mass Spectrometry and Small Instrument Core Facilities (50%). Princeton Biophysics Core Facility: The manager will work to establish the new Princeton Biophysics Core Facility, a joint operation of the Departments of Molecular Biology and Chemistry. The manager will implement training procedures that allow users from chemistry, molecular biology and other affiliated departments to access core facility instrumentation independently. The manager should advance Princeton's technological capabilities in biomaterial analysis in a manner that is focused on meeting researcher needs in the two departments as defined by the faculty steering committee. The manager's primary job will be to support the research of a wide diversity of Princeton scientists; the manager will not run an independent research program. The manager will work hands-on in facility operation, from maintenance of instruments (including analytical ultracentrifuge, surface plasmon resonance spectrometer, stopped flow spectrophotometer, etc.) through data acquisition and analysis, as well as purchasing and billing. Mass Spectrometry and Analytical Instrument Core Facility: The analytical spectroscopist will work with, and report to, the director of the Mass Spectrometry and Small Instrument Core Facilities on all aspects of the operation and management of these facilities. The position includes operations of the departmental EPR spectrometer and the small instrument cluster (IR, UV-vis, fluorimeter etc. including instruments in the teaching laboratories). Duties and responsibilities include helping with the maintenance and repair of the instruments, training new users, teaching spectroscopic techniques, and participation in research projects as requested by faculty. The analytical spectroscopist will also work with the director on the financial management of the facility, including purchasing of equipment and supplies, collecting and reporting monthly usage, and billing of internal and external users for the services provided in the facility. Specific responsibilities with respect to each facility include: -Maintaining instruments in top working condition, including directly handling some repairs -Troubleshooting experimental difficulties -Helping with data acquisition and analysis -Designing and conducting advanced experiments -Providing accurate information to guide future instrument purchases -Contributing to efforts to raise funds for future instruments -Supervising facility logistics, including purchasing and billing -Developing and implementing training procedures -Conducting and arranging departmental educational sessions, regularly -Communicating effectively with faculty, students, and staff -Contributing to data management and archiving -Developing and maintaining standard operating procedures for data acquisition and display The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a closely related field and have demonstrated proficiency in instrumental analysis. The manager will maintain complete and accurate records of user activities for recharge purposes, establish platforms for documenting operating and analytical procedures, and comply with safety and security standards and procedures.
