Illinois Humanities is a statewide nonpartisan civic and cultural organization that fuels inquiry and conversation in ways that strengthen society. We grow social, economic, and political value through informed public discourse and exposure to ideas. Our programs examine issues related to public policy, media & journalism, business, and art. And, we operate a suite of programs that lower socio-economic and geographic barriers to participation. In 2015, Illinois Humanities implemented a new brand strategy and reshaped and its programs. Recent programmatic growth includes: establishing the People-Powered Publishing Conference; adding sites for the Odyssey Project; establishing Illinois Speaks discussions about contemporary issues important to the local communities across the state; producing Crowd Out, a community engagement and choral music performance for 1,000 singers, and a developing series on criminal justice issues.
In the next phase of Illinois Humanities’ growth, we will strengthen our brand presence, build an institutional marketing strategy, grow our audiences, and expand our fundraising. To drive this effort, Illinois Humanities is seeking a communications manager, who will establish relationships with the media, maintain our website, manage our social media presence, and communicate effectively with donors.
Specific responsibilities will include:
Create and manage an annual communications plans, including setting priorities among programs, development, and other institutional needs, and maintaining a calendar of communications activities
Manage the creative production of print, digital, and social media campaigns
Cultivate relationships with media contacts
Lead the generation of online content
Coordinate website maintenance, ensuring the timely and consistent posting of information
Work with the Director of Advancement to produce fundraising letters and other collateral; develop all collateral for the annual Public Humanities Award Luncheon
Train and lead staff to support communications efforts
Track and evaluate the level of use of our communications outlets
Support members of the Board of Directors in their endeavor to communicate about the organization
Report on progress on communications activity to the Board of Directors and staff
Support advocacy campaigns to elected officials
Provide proofreading and copy editing across the organization
The Communications Manager will be strategic, highly-organized, collaborative, and results-oriented. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the role of the humanities in strengthening communities, work with a diverse staff across the organization. S/he will excel at building and maintaining relationships with media contacts, developing and executing communications strategies, and implementing the day-to-day tasks of digital communications and institutional marketing. The Communications Manager will bring knowledge of audience building and stakeholder engagement.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
At least four years of progressively responsible experience in communications
Ability to design and implement communications strategy, attract earned media, and grow audiences
Ability to think strategically and manage details
Ability to craft highly engaging messages that reflect the organization’s brand
Excellent writing and editing skills
Experience in digital communications, including web development and maintenance and social media
Understanding of and enthusiasm for the mission of Illinois Humanities
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and maintain collegial working relationships with staff at all level
Proficiency with WordPress and the standard office computer software suite, including Word, InDesign, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with Raiser’s Edge a plus
B.A. degree; advanced degree, or commensurate experience
