Full Time 40 hours Grade 092 Surgical Pathology SMH Responsibilities General Purpose: Under the direction of the Gross Room Supervisor, with technical input from the Pathologistsâ™ assistants, is responsible primarily for the gross dictation and processing of surgical pathology biopsy specimens. Responsibilities: Provide gross description and submission of biopsy specimens (trained as a progression â“ see below) according to the gross room manual, while maintaining specimen integrity and using universal precautions. Ensure appropriate specimen accessioning via name verification, surgical pathology number, type and number of specimens received in each case to correspond to information given on the requisition and cassettes. Inform the Operations coordinator in accessioning of any discrepancies immediately and before proceeding. Progression of biopsy specimen training: Small, entirely submitted biopsy specimens ( e.g. GI, GYN, heart, lung) Need cores ( e.g. kidney, prostate, liver, soft tissue, breast, bone marrow) Skin punches and shaves Skin ellipses (unoriented), intact GI polyps, temporal arteries Skin ellipses (oriented), cervical cone biopsies Assist with maintain a clean, safe, and organized frozen section area. Assist with the technical aspect of frozen sections. Assist with specimen procurement and specimen preparation. Enter specimen information into the SoftPath system. Miscellaneous duties as assigned. Qualifications: A 4 year college education which included Laboratory Sciences and technical training closely related to this position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required; or a 2 year college education leading to an Associate degree in Laboratory Sciences and/or related technical subjects and 2 years of directly related experience. Prefer AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology. Must hold NYS Clinical Laboratory Technician license or be eligible for NYS license. Ability to identify and resolve problems. Ability to pay attention to detail and handle frequent interruptions. Work well in a team environment. Function effectively in a rapidly changing environment. Effective interpersonal skills. Excellent communication, word processing, and computer skills. Able to prioritize and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks.
