The ADA Coordinator/Learning Specialist serves as the principal coordinator for Unity College programs, services, policies, and procedures relating to maintaining compliance with the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act, Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities. Provides highly-individualized personal empowerment and academic mentoring to Unity College students and contributes to a campus culture of support and student success through outreach and programming for the Collaborative Learning Center (CLC). Specific duties include (but are not all inclusive):
Develops an inclusive campus ADA plan.
Assist with evening coverage of the CLC as necessary to maintain open hours and ensure availability for students.
Serves as the central intake for all matters relating to the ADA and maintains confidential records in accordance with best practices. Provides information on accommodation requests to college offices as needed.
Evaluates documentation for accommodation requests and determines approval or denial.
Communicates with Residence Life, Dining Services, Academic Affairs to coordinate the seamless provision of appropriate physical and/or academic accommodations with relevant Unity College staff and faculty. Gathers information from other offices on resource implications of accommodation requests.
Communicates final decisions to students and informs them of appeal process if necessary.
Provides intensive academic mentoring and personal support to Unity College students receiving ADA Accommodations. Creates and maintains detailed confidential online records. Monitors the academic progress and retention of students receiving accommodations.
Reaches out to students identified by the Student Support Team; serves as a liaison between faculty and students to coordinate academic interventions; accepts referrals from college counseling services for students who need help developing academic skills.
Develops and delivers up-to-date, specialized tutor training programs for peer mentors that focus on optimal engagement strategies for students with physical and learning disabilities.
The qualified candidate will have a Master's degree in education, counseling, college personnel services or a related field and three years of experience at the college level working with students having physical and/or learning challenges. A bachelor's degree in combination with at least six years of professional experience may be considered. Possess thorough knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Demonstrated successful experience working directly with college students as a counselor, advisor and/or personal mentor. Comprehensive knowledge of student development and learning theory. Work fluently with spreadsheet, database software, word processing, Internet, Microsoft Windows applications, educational software and assistive technology. Clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with a wide range of individuals in the campus community, provide group training sessions and respond to questions from managers, students, parents, and the general public. Demonstrated skills as a presenter/trainer. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with employees, administration, faculty, staff, students and off-campus community partners. Ability to generate and analyze data and write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Valid driver's license and good driving record.
This position is primarily a day shift position with weekends and extended hours as needed. May sometimes include participation in college events, student activities and events, ceremonies, and outdoor activities including occasional evening and weekend work. Must be flexible in meeting the college's needs.
This is a full-time, year-round position.
