CONTEXT OF THE POSITION
Seek private funding for annual operating needs, special projects, and campaign initiatives. This position will function as an integral and collaborative member of CBF’s Development Department and the Individual Major Gifts team, with a particular focus on the greater Hampton Roads region.
Essential functions include:
1. Seek private funding for annual operating needs and campaign initiatives, including: • Manage and grow a portfolio of donors, prospects, and suspects (primarily individuals and family foundations) capable of making major gift commitments at the $10,000+ level, with a focus on securing new and increased gifts and pledges of $5,000 or more annually. • Collaborate with the Corporation, Foundation, and Grants team as needed to target corporations and foundations in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore for donor cultivation and grant solicitation. • Steward corporate and community partnerships for outright gifts and sponsorship for CBF events, and cause-related marketing ventures. • Identify suitable matches between CBF programs and a donor’s funding objectives. • Achieve monthly and annual goals for number of visits to donors and prospects to steward and cultivate giving. • Achieve monthly and annual goals for discovery calls to qualify potential donors and determine capacity and inclination to give. • Conduct regular stewardship visits to encourage planned giving commitments. • Serve as an effective and recognized representative of CBF in Virginia. • Engage donors and prospects in events and field activities as part of the cultivation and stewardship process.
2. Engage CBF program staff, volunteers, and trustees in the development process: • Work closely with colleagues in CBF’s Hampton Roads, Richmond, Washington DC, Maryland, and Pennsylvania offices, engaging them in cultivating and stewarding donors. • Work with CBF volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors. • Collaborate with other CBF Development team members to: shape fundraising strategies for specific donors; report on progress with assigned donors as part of regularly scheduled prospect management meetings; and provide accurate revenue projections for progress toward key team goals. • Collaborate with CBF colleagues to support Hampton Roads programmatic activities.
3. Help to develop CBF’s visibility, membership, and overall base of support throughout the region. • Facilitate outreach events in Hampton Roads working with appropriate staff in Development and other departments. Events are to educate and cultivate prospects, and to steward members and donors. • Promote regional CBF activities and accomplishments to donors and prospects to strengthen the CBF brand. • Develop an understanding of local, state, and federal environmental concerns and effectively articulate CBF’s position and statement of need. Coordinate such messages to further engage donors in CBF’s advocacy efforts.
4. Monitor and oversee program expense budgets, ensuring proper approval and coding of expenses.

A Bachelor’s degree and minimum of five years experience with major gift solicitations; capital campaign experience preferred. Successful candidate will demonstrate excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; an ability to work effectively with volunteers and leadership; an ability to work as a member of a fundraising team; proficiency in computer systems; and knowledge of Salesforce or similar fundraising software preferable. Experience in a mission-driven, environmental advocacy and educational organization is desirable; a commitment to the environment and a passion for the mission of CBF is also preferred.
