California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is an internationally-recognized leader in integral education. The Student Affairs staff at CIIS supports students in a global context, both professionally and personally, with co-curricular resources and programs. A team of staff and student workers are led by the Dean of Students and Associate Dean of Students. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of Students and is responsible for the assisting with the overall vision and administration of this comprehensive Student Affairs unit.
The Associate Dean provides leadership, vision, and administrative oversight for communications and community development, specifically targeted at online, low-residency, hybrid, and "satellite campus" students; student service standard compliance in relation with other CIIS offices; and student governance management with the end goal to create channels of communication among students, departments/chairs, schools/deans, and the higher administration. The Associate Dean will provide oversight over housing initiatives at the student residence, the Monastery and ensuring a strong point of contact for any distance students, including ACTCM@CIIS students, with Student Affairs and the larger CIIS. The Associate Dean will lead university-wide New Student Orientation and Commencement programs. The Associate Dean will work collaboratively with the Dean of Students to address issues of diversity and campus climate, including fostering an inclusive and culturally competent campus community. The Associate Dean will also partner with the Dean of Students to develop effective assessment models for the unit and for the university.
The Associate Dean must convey a passion for student development and innovative thinking that enhances opportunities for students to succeed in a primarily graduate-level academic and social environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Address student concerns and issues, promoting positive institutional change on behalf of students. Provide facilitation and mediation among students, faculty, and staff as necessary in response to student concerns.
Develop a sense of community, including in-person and online community structures, for distance and satellite CIIS students, specifically in the growing areas of online, low-res, and hybrid students.
Administer the institutional response upon student initiation of the Student Complaint Procedure.
Collaborate with Academic Affairs, the Registrar's Office, the Business Office, Financial Aid, and
Admissions in facilitating resolution of student challenges and grievances.
Liaise with Financial Aid, the Business Office, and other appropriate offices in to support student financial needs, including oversight of the Student Cash Advance process.
Support the Dean of Students in addressing issues related to Student Disability Services and Title IX.
Oversee the annual institute-wide commencement process, and the Fall and Spring new student orientations.
Collaborate with Admissions to coordinate the dissemination of information and materials regarding campus life and Student Affairs to prospective and newly matriculated students throughout the recruitment and admissions process.
Oversee the collection and reporting of area crime statistics in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act.
Student Affairs Leadership and Strategy
Support the Dean of Students in leading the Student Affairs team, with direct oversight and supervision of student activities and student government.
Assist in leading the coordination of the publication of the annual Student Handbook and other Student Affairs print and electronic materials in association with the appropriate staff.
Assist in leading institutional response in student crisis situations, working with appropriate departments and staff members as needed.
Assist in creating, conducting and assessing the annual Student Satisfaction Survey. Assist with the collection and analysis of data that addresses effectiveness of student services. Coordinate the dissemination of analysis reporting to appropriate faculty and administrative offices.
Collaborate with the Dean of Students in developing and implementing strategic goals and objectives, using assessment data to guide continuous improvement of Student Affairs in support of student learning and services.
Collaborate on institute-wide efforts towards student success, retention, and timely graduation through collaboration with Academic Affairs, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Registrar's Office, the Business Office, Financial Aid, Admissions, Development and other departments.
Assist in management of the Student Affairs operating budget.
Develop and oversee, in partnership with their Student Alliance / Activities direct report, CIIS's new student governance model, partnering closely with Academic Deans, faculty, and staff.
Recruit, hire, supervise, train, and evaluate Student Affairs staff, including student workers at both the Mission Street and ACTCM@CIIS campuses, ensuring high levels of accountability. Provide information and opportunities for professional development and ongoing training.
Oversee housing at the Monastery.
Master's Degree required in higher education administration, counseling, or related field.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education and student services, with a focus on graduate student populations
Strong leadership skills, vision, student-centered philosophy, and enthusiasm to build on the institute's tradition of integral education
Strong interest in and experience with building community and communicating effectively within online, low-residency, and hybrid student communities
Ability to effectively manage crisis situations
Exceptional mediation and conflict resolution skills
Ability to develop a network across the organization and cultivate strong interdepartmental relationships
Working knowledge of federal policies, including the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, Title II, and Title IX
In depth knowledge of ADA/504 regulations
Strong working knowledge and understanding of established professional codes of ethics and best practices for Student Affairs professionals
Experience with and knowledge of student counseling services
Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse socio-economic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve; and sensitivity to and understanding of historically underrepresented groups, and groups who have experienced discrimination
Outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills. Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and all external constituencies
Ability to work some evenings and weekends, and to have flexibility and an openness to adapt occasional hours to suit online, low-res, hybrid, and non-traditional schedules
Demonstrated experience in assessment and evaluation
Proficiency in computer skills including MS Word, Excel, databases, electronic communication, the Internet, and web based applications
