Duties for Pulmonary, Traditional, and Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation
The Medical Director/Clinical Advisor provides general oversight to the rehabilitation staff on program effectiveness and outcomes, and serves as a resource for medical and patient care issues that arise during program operations. The Director provides substantial involvement in directing the progress of individual patients in consultation with appropriate staff.
The Director assumes responsibility for managing the patient's rehabilitation course to include patient participation, medication reconciliation review, psychosocial assessment, exercise prescription, risk factor counseling and registry/outcomes (AACVPR & Ornish). Individual patient care remains under the management of each patient's referring physician.
Current BLS & ACLS certification with experience and knowledge in emergency procedure.
Willing to champion Traditional Cardiac Rehabilitation (TCR) and Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation (ICR)) as an essential part of the continuum of care to hospital, medical and lay communities.
The supervising physician must be on site, able and accessible for medical consultation and immediately available at all times that patients are under treatment; immediately available means that the responsible and accountable physician must be able to respond to an emergency.
Desire to work and consult with a comprehensive healthcare team. Meet with the clinical and administrative team as needed and present brief education topics/patient outcomes/case studies at monthly meetings. Share evidence-based guidelines with staff. Willing to assist staff with educational pursuits and promote professional development.
Collaborate with Hospital Administration to achieve system and hospital quality objectives, with specific performance goals for the medical director and the CV service line.
MD or DO/Colorado license
Supervise the development, implementation and scheduled revisions of the program policies and procedures, protocols and standing orders.
Develop and present community or patient education programs on request as well as participate in marketing and promotional activities outside of the scope of routine medical director responsibilities.
Serve as a liason to the medical staff and other clinicians. Communicate with referring physicians on a 1:1 basis as needed.
Participate in and advise on case management issues as needed.
Designate who the supervising physician will be during his/her absence to assure medical supervision during all program sessions.
Evaluate and resolve patient complaints as it relates to medical director or covering physicians' issues.
Serve as physician supervisor with oversight of pharmacy transfers.
Assures the internal and external regulatory requirements are met, which includes local Medicare regulations. Collaborates with staff in developing plans for responding to changing regulatory requirements that impact cardiac rehab services or operations.
Supports all safety measures and emergency procedures to include: life safety, review and discuss all untoward events with staff, review and evaluation of abnormal rhythm strips identified by staff.
Role models program philosophy and personal lifestyle modifications.
Personal availability to respond to urgent/emergent developments in cardiac rehabilitation.
Available to staff to discuss clinical issues or questions related to patients.
Supervise and approve all initial intakes to include Individual Treatment Plan (ITP) accuracy and appropriateness for the program.
Review progress and outcomes of each cardiac rehab patient every 30 days and signs updated ITPs. Communicates suggested modifications to the ITP or exercise prescription to cardiac rehab staff.
ICR Additional Responsibilities:
Ability to participate in initial "Dr Dean Ornish" training program and any re-training programs needed.
Perform medical records review with Nurse Case Manager on all potential participants and identifies need for further medical inquiry. Review medical issues with Nurse Case Manager, staff and participants as needed. Participate in weekly team meetings.
Promote the program to prospective participants and health care professionals to meet participant enrollment objectives. Discuss program activities and outcomes.
Deliver program lectures to patients and staff on the medical aspects of the "Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing heart Disease".
Develop professional interest in the program within the local medical community in order to create a robust physician referral base.
Provide support to the Ornish Alumni Community as needed.
