Position Summary and Responsibilities
VELLOP (Vassar English Language Learner Outreach Program) is designed to provide outreach services to English Language Learners through tutoring, alternative academic assistance, and enrichment opportunities. The program increases Vassar's visible presence in the Poughkeepsie Latino Community and provides classroom opportunities for Vassar students.
Around 100 ELL students at the High School, Early Elementary, and Kindergarten levels are served each year through our program. They receive tutoring services 5 days a week, and have access to after school tutoring 2 days a week. In addition students are invited to participate in other VCUEI programming and to attend 3-4 enrichment activities per year. These enrichment activities include visits to the Vassar campus, a Spanish Language Spelling Bee, and multicultural celebrations.
In support of this initiative, Vassar College is offering a temporary ten-month position. The VELLOP Coordinator's principle responsibilities include:
Facilitating day-to-day implementation VELLOP, 1000 service hour per semester
Recruiting and preparing 30 Vassar College students to serve as tutors and coordinating tutoring schedules
Overseeing and hiring community service work study students
Communicating and collaborating with faculty and administrators at Poughkeepsie schools, community organizations, and professors in the Education and Hispanic Studies Departments
Maintaining program records and reporting
Hiring and overseeing a VELLOP elementary intern each semester
Organizing and overseeing 4 enrichment activities for HS tutors and ELL students.
Overseeing ESL classroom technology program at elementary level
Maintain VELLOP blog
Performs other duties as assigned.
This position is temporary for the 2017/2018 academic year.
Qualifications Candidates possessing a teaching certificate or correlate in education are especially encouraged to apply. Bachelor's degree or higher required. Experience working with diverse student populations in urban settings, demonstrated multicultural competence, and knowledge and/or experience working with low-income, under-represented students from diverse backgrounds is necessary. Spanish is a plus.
